Blake Hopper stood aboard the H.M.S. Dauntless, the formidable, frightening and  twenty-five gun ports on the side looming near.

Her cousin, Elizabeth Swann, stood by her side, the honey brunette girl lowly singing to a sea shanty they had learned from the multitude of books containing lore on pirates. The girls jumped as a hand with skin a dark leather, clutched their shoulders, startling them.

They turned to see Joshamee Gibbs, whose jaw was clenched, hissing through his teeth, "Quiet, missy! Cursed pirates sail these waters. You want to call 'em down on us?"

"Mr. Gibbs, I do not see why you shall get your point across with your hand on a lady," Blake's twelve-year-old eyes were dark, "Please remove your hands from us."

The man did as asked and another voice was heard, saying, "Mr. Gibbs. That will do."

Elizabeth and Blake turned to see a Royal Navy soldier,  Norrington, standing beside Weatherby Swann.

"She was singing about pirates," Gibbs told him, his voice almost scared, "Bad luck to sing about pirates, with us mired in this unnatural fog; mark my words."

Norrington pursed his lips, raising a brow at him, "Consider them marked. On your way."

"'Aye Lieutenant."

Gibbs began walking away, muttering as he passed the two men, "It's bad luck to have a woman on board. Even two miniature ones."

The man returned to his deck-swabbing duties, surreptitiously taking a swing from his flask before he did so. Elizabeth and Blake stood with their hands in front of them, looking up to the two men.

"I think it would be rather exciting to meet a pirate," Elizabeth told.

Blake simply shrugged, "They seem arrogant and glib to me, cousin. Though, most men do. The only thing that seems intriguing is having a sword."

Norrington held back a smile at the girl's words, saying, "Think again, Miss Swann. Vile and dissolute creatures, the lot of them. I intend to see to it that a pirate glad, or wears the pirate brand, gets what he deserves: a short drop and a sudden stop."

Elizabeth quirked a brow and looked over to Blake for an explanation, the girl simply looking at Norrington with an accusatory glare.

"If you were to kill a man for piracy, who has killed someone as well, I raise you a question Lieutenant Norrington. Does that make you better than a pirate?"

"Blake," Weatherby almost hissed, face blushing in embarrassment as Gibbs gestured to a man being hanged for Elizabeth, who now understood the conversation.
