THOMAS POV

I sit in my bed. "Hey, what do you think those guys wanted with Teresa?" I ask anxiously.

Newt shifts above me. "If there's one thing I know about that girl, she can take of herself. Don't worry about it."

I lay down, anxious. After everyone else has fallen asleep, Newt hops down and sits on the edge of my bed.

"What are you doing?" I ask groggily.

He lays next to me, not touching me, but almost. "This is all so weird, Tommy." He says.

"I know." I say. "Is there something bothering you?" I ask him.

"Yeah, no, I-" He sighs. "I dunno. This is all so bloody confusing."

"I know." I say gently.

He sighs and licks his lips. "I guess I just-" He shakes his head. "Nevermind."

Then, we hear a whisper from under the bed.

"Tommy, you hiding a guy under there?" He teases.

"I dunno." I say. "Lemme check."

I lean down and indeed see a boy.

"I guess I am." I report.

Newt peeks down with me. "Oh. Hello." He says.

"Down here." The boy hisses.

"Oh my god..." I mutter.

But I climb down and Newt follows me. We crawl into the vents.

"Come on, follow me!" He says.

"What?" Newt whispers.

"This way!" The boy says. "Hurry!"

We stop at a huge opening with a window at the bottom.

"What the hell are we doing?" I ask the boy.

"Come on, we're gonna miss it." He says.

"What are we doing?" I ask.

"Come on. Watch." He says.

We watch someone wheel something, a body, in a on a bed, past us and into a room.

"What the hell was that?" I ask.

"They bring in new ones every night like clockwork." He says.

"You know what they do with them?" Newt asks.

"I don't know." He says. "This is as far as I've ever gotten. The vents don't even go into that section. But once they go through that door, they don't come out. I don't think anybody ever really leaves this place." He sighs. "Come on, we gotta go before anyone notices we're gone."

"Why did you show us this?" I ask.

"Because maybe the others will listen to you." He says. "There's something weird going on here and I know you think so too."

The boy makes to leave but Newt stops him.

"Hey, what's your name?" He asks.

"Aris."

NEWT POV

We sit in the cafeteria, talking.

"I wanna know what's through that door." Thomas says.

"Now, Thomas, we've been over this." I say, putting a hand on his arm.

"Aris said they bring in a new batch every night!" He exclaims.

"Okay, Tommy, until we know anything for certain, we should just keep our heads down and try not to draw attention to ourselves, alright?" I say gently, moving my hand to his shoulder.

Thomas stands and walks over to the doors.

"What the hell is he doing?" I ask Fry.

"I think he's drawing attention to himself." He says.

I slap myself in the face. Of course he is.

"Hang on. You weren't called." A guard says, cocking his gun.

"I know, I'm just gonna be a second."  Thomas says.

I get up and stand a bit back from him.

"This is a restricted area, kid." He says

"I just wanna see my friend. Can you let me through?" I roll my eyes.

"Get your ass back in that chair." The man says, poking him in the chest.

Thomas makes to turn back but then runs into the man's chest.

"Back off!"

"What's your problem, man!" He cries. "Why won't you let me see her?"

I grab Thomas's shoulders and pull him back.

"Control your friend!" He shouts.

Janson walks over to him. "What happened here? Thomas?" He says, putting a hand on his chest.

I want to stab him.

"I thought we could trust each other?" He says. "We're all on the same team here."

"Are we?" Thomas says, breathing hard.

We are led roughly to our bunks and shoved in. I land on my broken wrist and I cry out in pain.

"Newt!" Thomas shouts, kneeling next to me. "Are you okay?"

I push myself up using my good hand.

"I'm fine, Tommy, I'm-AGH!" I cry involuntarily when my wrist touches the ground.

"You're not fine, Newt." Thomas says, exasperated. "Please let me take you to the doctors."

I feel like I might throw up from the pain. "No." I say. "I'm fine."

But when I try to stand, my legs won't take my weight. I fall to my knees.

"Okay, it's no longer an option." Thomas says.

He wraps his arm around my waist and puts mine around his shoulders.

"I swear, Tommy, I'm fine!" I protest.

"I will carry you there if I half to." He says.

I give in.

"Tommy, I can walk. It's my wrist that's hurt." I say.

"Well, clearly, you can't." He says.

I let him take me to the doctors. Then, Janson walks up to me.

"Now, Newt, why did you hide this?" He asks, talking to me like a child. "I could have helped sooner."

I glare at him. "It's Tommy's fault I'm even here, Janson." I spit his name.

"Mmm." He says. He waves the doctor at me.

He wraps my wrist and gives me medicine for the pain that makes me slightly giddy and wobbly.

I fall against Thomas as we walk back to the bunks. "Sorry." I say, laughing.

He chuckles as we enter and Aris stands there.

"Okay, Newt, wait here." He says as he disappears into the vents with Aris. "I'll be back soon."

"Okay!" I giggle.

I fall, laughing, onto Thomas's bed because I don't trust my legs to make it up the ladder to mine.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Newt?" Minho asks.

I wave my bandaged hand in the air. Minho chuckles.

"Yeah, alright."

Then, I pass out, legs hanging over the edge of the bed.
