Prologue - Talia

People assume that when you're little, you don't remember anything. And, most of the time, that was true. But Talia knew that even though she was only four when it happened, she was never going to forget this.

In fact, it was all a bit too clear.

The warmth of her dad's smile on what, unbeknownst to her, would be the last day she saw him.

The shrill scream of when he was suddenly taken.

The glint of the crystal necklaces on the horrifying figures who had taken him— both with blurry faces that were impossible to focus on.

The first person's nasal voice whispering: "All this time, he was lying to us."

Then the other one saying: "Finish him."

Then— despite Talia and her mom's screams— her father and the two people disappeared in a weird haze of light, and nobody ever saw him again.

Try forgetting that.
