He used to be really really close with his brother, and his brother loved watching him do his magic tricks, and his brother always wanted him to test his new tricks out on him, which is why he accidentally made him disappear while practising his disappearing trick one day on him. Maybe he has mild PTSD from it and that's why he sometimes can't get things to appear again or make the right thing show up because he's scared something and will happen.
