Chapter 31

Steve, Sam, Bucky, Natasha and I fly out to London for Peggy's funeral. we sit at the front while Steve is one of the six pallbearers carrying her coffin. Steve comes to sit with us and continues to cry silently while i hold his hand trying to comfort him but allowing him to grief "And now, I would like to invite Sharon Carter to come up and say a few words." The priest says, Steve keeps looking down 

My focus is on him as i feel Sam nudge me "Ouch" I say looking up to see THE Sharon walking up "Margaret Carter was known to most as a founder of SHIELD . . . but I just knew her as Aunt Peggy." Sharon says and Steve looks up in shock with a silent gasp "She had a photograph in her office. Aunt Peggy standing next to JFK. As a kid, that was pretty cool. But it was a lot to live up to. Which is why I never told anyone we were related." She says 

"You didn't know?" I ask silently and Steve shakes his head "I asked her once how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. And she said, compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move . . . it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in they eye and say " No, you move." " Sharon continues 

 After the funeral Steve and I remain in the cathedral, a few moments later we hear Natasha coming "When I came out of the ice, I thought everyone I had known was gone. Then I found out that she was alive. I was just lucky to have her." Steve says "She had your back, too" Natasha says "Who else signed?" Steve asks "Tony. Rhodey. Vision." Natasha says "Clint?" I ask "Says he's retired" She replies and i sigh

"Wanda?" Steve asks "TBD. I'm off to Vienna for the signing of the Accords. There's plenty of room on the jet. Bucky decided to come" Natasha says and i shake my head while Steve looks down "Just because it's the path of least resistance doesn't mean it's the wrong path. Staying together is more important than how we stay together." Natasha says looking between us "What are we giving up to do it?" Steve asks 

"I'm sorry Nat. I can't sign it" Steve says and Natasha turns to look at me "I can't either" I say "I know" Natasha says "Your dad will be furious" Natasha says "I am as stubborn as my father, he will be furious but he will understand it better than anyone else. He taught me to stand up to what i believe is right" I say and she nods 

We walk out to see Sharon crying "Do you want us to walk you back?" I suggest she looks at me in shock "I thought you hated me" Sharon says and i shake my head "It was never your fault, i know that" I say "You know at the beginning it was meant to be a job, keeping Steve Rogers in check. I'm sorry i caused so much chaos" Sharon says and i smile "Come on" I say walking away with her and Steve towards her hotel

"My mom tried to talk me out of enlisting, but, um, not Aunt Peggy. She bought me my first thigh holster." Sharon says "Very practical" Steve replies "And stylish" I say with a smile "CIA has you stationed over here now?" Steve asks " In Berlin, Joint Terrorism Task Force." Sharon replies "Right right. Sounds fun" Steve replies "I know, right" Sharon says with a smile "I've been meaning to ask you. When you were spying on me" Steve begins to say

"You mean doing my job" She says with a laugh which i join "Did Peggy know?" Steve asks " She kept so many secrets. I didn't want her to have one from you" Sharon says as the elevator dings "Thank you, both of you, for walking me back" Sharon says and we nod with a smile "There's something you both have to see" Sam says approaching us 

Sharon let's us into her room and we turn on the TV "More than 70 people have been injured. At least 12 are dead, including Wakanda's King T'Chaka. Officials have released a video of a suspect who they have identified as James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier. The infamous HYDRA agent, linked to numerous acts of terrorism and political assassinations." The news anchor says and i stare in shock 

"This isn't possible" I say "Bucky wouldn't" Steve says "We know that, they don't know he's with us yet" Sam says and i run my hand over my face "I have to go to work" Sharon says and we nod "Are you coming?" She asks us and we smile following her out. 

We fly out to Vienna hiding from SHIELD "We're practically criminals" I say to Sam as Steve goes outside to answer a call from Natasha "She knows we aren't just going to let go" I say "She told us to stay out of it" Steve says "And we aren't going to" I say "She says someone will arrest us for getting involved" Steve says and i flash him my eyes "I want to see them try" I say 

Sharon sits on the other side of Steve "Tips have been pouring in since that footage went public. Everybody thinks the Winter soldier goes to their gym. Most of it's noise. Except for this." Sharon says before sliding her phone in front of us "My boss expects a briefing, pretty much now . . . so that's all the head start you're gonna get." Sharon says and we smile "Thank you Sharon" I say smiling 

"And you're gonna have to hurry. We have orders to shoot on sight." Sharon says and we nod "Thank you" Steve says "We need to find him" Sam says
