Tuesday

2.09 p.m.

My phone starts to blare ‘All You Need is Love’ by The Beatles.

I look at the screen.

My heart skips a beat involuntarily. My hands become clammy.

You are calling.

I tap on the green button. I clear my throat.

“Hello?”

“Hey, K.” Your voice makes me melt.

“What’s up?” I act casual. “You rarely call.”

You chuckle and I blush.

“Yeah.” You say. “I just wanted to call to see how you’re doing.”

“Oh.” I coo. “I am perfectly fine.”

“Really?” You sound surprised. “So, you’re clear from the cold, now?”

“Sorry?”

“I thought you had a cold that’s why you couldn’t join us last night?”

“What?” I ask, more surprised than you were.

“We were supposed to go out for supper but Annie told me you caught up with a cold that’s why you couldn’t make it. Right?”

“Oh.” My heart hurts. “Right, right…”

“So, are you? Are you all better now?”

“Yeah, I am. I went to the doctor’s today. He said it’s just a normal cold.” I lie.

“That’s great news, then.”

“It is.” I fight back the tears. “Hmm… I have to go now. See you at midnight then?”

“Didn’t Annie tell you?”

“What is it?”

“That Annie and I are going out again tonight.”  You say.

“Oh, right.” I chuckle, trying to fight the daggers in my heart. “I keep forgetting things.”

“You could come with us if you want to.”

“No, no. It’s all right. You two have fun.”

You laugh. “All right then. I will see you soon.”

“All right. Bye.”

“Bye.”

  And, then you hang up.

Leaving me and my broken heart behind.
