You were given the Grand Tour by Alby, which told you the following things:
1) You were in a place called the Glade which was surrounded an enormous Maze and a by a bunch of boys, who called themselves Gladers, among which you were found to be the only girl.
2) The fact that you couldn't remember anything about your previous life was apparently "normal," but it seemed as if you would remember you name in a day or so. Or so Alby had said.
3) Grievers were bad and getting stung by one was worse, causing what they called the "Changing."
4) The Glade had three rules and three rules only, which were
- Everyone does their part. No slackers allowed.
- Never harm another Glader. Trust is key.
- No matter what happens, non-runners are never allowed into the Maze.
5) In order to keep peace and order, each Glader was assigned a specific job--out of many. The Gladers worked at their job all day, with the exception of a slight lunch break. Each job has a leader, or Keeper, who represents those Gladers at the Council.
These jobs included:
- Builders: Built the dwelling places in the Glade.
- Brincknicks: Building repair.
- Sloppers: Considered the "lowest" job; the tasks that most Gladers wouldn't want to do.
- Baggers: Guards of the Glade.
- Cooks: (Self-explanatory).
- Track-Hoes: Garden workers--involving everything to do with field-work.
- Med-Jacks: Doctors.
- Slicers: Work in the Bloodhouse, tend livestock and preparing them for meals.
- Runners: Gladers who run and map the Maze, being the only ones allowed inside of it.
Alby didn't assign you a job, and you thought you knew why. You were a girl, and they were trying to figure out what to do with you.
You looked up suddenly, realizing that Alby had walked quite a ways ahead and had been talking to you the entire time--as you daydreamed about the previous events.
"Sorry, Alby," you hurriedly apologized and ran to catch up to him, "What were you saying?"
"Quite alright, Greenie," he said with a half-smile. "It's a lot to take in your first day. I was just saying how we Gladers have something special planned for you for tonight."
You were about to ask him what he meant by that, when you looked over and caught Gally staring at you as he dumped some unrecognizable thing into a kettle which he constantly stirred. As soon as he saw that he had been caught staring, Gally quickly took a keen interest with what he was doing, seeming as though he hadn't noticed the two of you.
"I thought you said that Gally was a Builder," you said, trying to ignore the slight rise of butterflies in your stomach as the name "Gally" passed over your lips.
"He is," Alby replied, "But that's Gally's special concoction. For tonight." He winked at you and you realized that that was all he was going to say about what was going to happen that night.
