It's Hard Not Slapping Some People

TW: an entitled mom (aka a Karen)

Virgil bounced his knee and played with the edges of his sleeve while he waited for his uncle to come. He was sitting in the principal's office with Mr. Croft and Brandon with his own mom.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Patton came through the door.

"Thank you for coming, Mr. Berry," the principal said. "Please take a seat."

"Is everything alright?" he asked, though Virgil could see he was really worried as he sat down next to him.

"Everything is fine, we just need to talk about what happened between your nephew and this young boy. Mr. Croft, can you explain what you saw?"

"Indeed, I was walking down the hall when I saw Brandon here shove Virgil roughly against a locker," Mr. Croft said.

"My Brandon would never!" his mother, Mrs. Shell, yelled.

"I can assure you that I do not lie."

"I'm sure that boy aggravated him!"

"Virgil wouldn't do that," Patton said calmly, putting a hand on Virgil's shoulder.

"I did tell him to leave me alone," Virgil mumbled.

"Oh please, I'm sure he gets into fights all the time! Just look at the way he dresses! And the scar next to his eye! He must have a horrible attitude, I'm sure his parents didn't want him which is why his uncle is taking care of him!"

"My mom is dead!" Virgil snapped at her. "I got the scar from the car crash that killed her and my dad has never met me so you can't say it was my attitude that made him leave!"

"Okay, let's just calm down," Patton said, offering a smile.

"I'm so sorry, you two," Mr. Croft told Patton and Virgil.

"Well, back to the matter at hand," the principal cut in. "Our school has a no tolerance policy so both students will be punished, however since Virgil never did anything he'll just have detention and Brandon will be suspended for a week."

"That's not fair!" Mrs. Shell shrieked.

"Mrs. Shell, this is Brandon's second offense and I am being very generous. I will not tolerate anymore misbehavior so either he gets his act together or he will be expelled. Mr. Croft, Mr. Berry, and Virgil you three may leave."

While Virgil was grateful to be out of the room and away from the screaming mother and her brat of a son, he was angry about detention. Hopefully it'll only be for a few days at most, but that doesn't mean he's happy about it!

"Again, I'm so sorry for the trouble that this has caused you," Mr. Croft has said. "I'll try to be the one to supervise Virgil while he's in detention so he won't be given a hard time, I really hate the no tolerance policy."

"Thank you, Mr. Croft," Patton said. "I'm really grateful for it."

"Well, we should both be heading back to class. Funny enough, Virgil is in my class right now, so we'll both be heading to the same place."

"Okay, well I guess I'll see both of you when I pick Virgil up later today. Thank you again, and Virgil I know detention sucks but I'm just happy you're alright."

"I'll be fine," Virgil mumbled, though his scowl suggested otherwise. "You should get going though, I don't want to bother you anymore."

"You don't bother me, but I do need to be going. I still have to get back to work. Bye, try to have a good rest of your day!"

"Bye," Virgil waved at him before following Mr. Croft back to class.

When he got back, he swears he's never seen Roman more nervous. And he passed out in front of the dude before! But Roman was pale and bouncing his knee while chewing on his lip.

He brightened the moment he saw Virgil, but still gave him a worried and questioning look. Virgil waved him off, giving him a look that said they'll talk about it later.

Logan told the class to not worry about what happened as he switched places with the other teacher and he started class.

Virgil sat down next to Roman, happy to be around him once again.

"Detention?!" Roman half shouted as they walked through the halls.

"It'll be fine," Virgil said, shrugging. But Roman knew he was upset about it.

"That's so unfair though, you didn't do anything!"

"Life is just like that sometimes. It could be worse though, I could have been suspended."

"Who was the kid that tried to pick a fight with you anyway? I'll kill them."

"Don't do that, you don't need to kill anyone."

"Fine, I'll just slap him."

"You'll get in trouble, and I don't want to be responsible for that. Besides, you already slapped one jerk for me. I can't have you fighting all of my battles."

"I would fight all of Heaven for you if I had to. You're my first real friend, and a great one at that."

Virgil smiled at that. He's had some friends before, but most kids were always too scared to talk to him. And here Roman was, a bright and sunny kid that Virgil never would have thought he would like, talking to him as if he was the best thing in the world. It was really cute.

"Well, I would fight the whole world for you," Virgil replied. "I might be small, but I have a strong punch. Plus I've been looking up a lot of self defense tips lately, this town is really dangerous sometimes."

Roman chuckled nervously, "Yeah, it gets pretty crazy here sometimes."

"Alright, final class of the day." They walked into their last class. "Then I have detention and then I will sleep the rest of the day away."

"Will you be able to get home fine?"

"Yeah, Uncle Pat says he'll pick me up. Don't worry, princey, I'll be fine."
