- A Wise Shepherd

A shepherd was busy grazing his sheep in a meadow. A learned man who was passing by realized that the shepherd was illiterate.

So he said to him: "Why don't you seek knowledge so that you may become a literate and learned man?"

The shepherd replied: "I've learnt the best parts of all sciences, so I don't need to go any further on this course."

"Tell me what is it you've learnt?"

"There are four things we should know:

First, not to lie so that truthfulness may reign.

Second, not to find fault with anyone, as long as I'm full of faults myself.

Third, not to eat prohibited food as long as there is permitted food for me.

And finally, never to neglect the devil's deceit and trickery, until I step into the land of paradise."
