Chapter 31

Derek woke up when he felt the matras shaking. He immediately turned around to check on Meredith who was sitting up

"Mer?"

"Sorry, did I wake you? They won't stop spasming" Meredith said as she tried to lean on her legs to keep them still but it didn't seem to work

"Probably because of PT yesterday. Do you want me to rub them?" Derek gently asked

Meredith nodded before leaning back in her pillow as Derek took her legs and placed them in his lap before he rubbed her muscles. Lucy and Meredith were training hard to keep her legs in shape and today they would test the new shock stimulation therapy.

They sat there for 20 minutes. Meredith's legs stopped spasming and when they decided to get out of bed they heard Zola waking up. Carolyn left a couple of days ago to take care of Derek's sister who's pregnant and ever since it was a bit of a struggle for the three of them to get ready but not impossible. It just needed to be scheduled. Their once hectic life was now about timing and arrangements.

"I'll go take her" Derek said as he got out of bed

"Hmm" She murmured as she pressed her head in her pillows again

"Need a shower?" Derek asked

"Yeah.. I.. I can't do it all alone" She sighed

"I'll help, don't worry. Go take your clothes of we'll be there soon" Derek said

"Thanks" She whispered as she got up and transferred in her chair before wheeling off to the bathroom

Derek walked into Zola's room "Hey, baby! Did you sleep well?"

"Da!" Zola screamed enthusiastically

"Come on, Zo. Let's take a bath while mommy's gonna take a shower.

Derek let the water run and checked the temperature before placing Zola in her bathtub seat. While Zola played with her ducks, Derek undressed himself to shower with Meredith.

"Can you.. hold me up?" She asked shy

"Of course, Mer" He smiled and he carried her in their open shower. The shower chair behind her in case she got too tired. Her arms on the leanings while she helped Derek to keep her weight up. Derek took her favourite shampoo, the one with lavender and started to wash her hair. Once he was done with her hair he checked again on Zola who was still playing with her toys so he started to wash their upper bodies. Once he was finished he helped Meredith to sit down again before washing her legs and feet. Her feet were turned in as she sat down. He was still amazed by her wonderful body, her arms grew in muscles and she still amazed him. He couldn't wait to move to the next step and get intimate again.

Once they were finished Derek put a towel around him and one around Meredith when Meredith wheeled over to Zola and started to wash her.

"Mer, is Alex gonna bring you and Zola home after PT?" Derek asked after they dropped Zola off in daycare and made their way to the PT floor.

"In fact, Zo is gonna stay in daycare and me, Alex, Jackson, April and Cristina are gonna study for our exam that's coming up. Richard and Bailey said I could still join"

"Of course you can, Mer and you'll do great! I'll go search you when my shift is done so we can pick up Zola together" Derek said

"Will you join us for lunch? I think I'll go get her at daycare so we can eat together"

"I would love to!" Derek said as they reached PT. "See you at lunch?" He asked

"See you at lunch!" She said before he kissed her on her lips

"You'll do great, Mer" He said as he took off

...

"So, Meredith. You're almost done for the day. Now I'm gonna connect the machine with your legs and strap them in so we can start, okay?" Lucy asked Meredith

Meredith nodded and carefully watched as Lucy hooked her up. Lucy turned on the machine but Meredith didn't seem to be impressed

"It's normal for your legs to not react. Your muscles have not been used in a while now. The SCI interrupted the connection between your legs and your spine. The nerve is damaged. We need to train the nerve, as well the muscles in your legs to re-connect."

Meredith nodded and carefully studied them until the end of the session. Once she was done she got back in her chair and wheeled out, saying bye to Lucy. She wheeled to daycare and picked up Zola before going to Derek's office before they went to the cafeteria together. Zola happily clapping in Meredith's lap as Meredith was pushing herself while Derek walked next to her as they were talking

"I'm gonna grab the food, are you and Zola gonna pick out a nice place to sit?" Derek asked

"Ma!" Zola said which made Meredith giggle

"Yes, Der" Meredith smiled as she took off to one of the tables in a corner of the cafeteria so not everyone would see them sitting

"So, this guy came in with a fish in his penis-" Derek was explaining as Meredith choked in her food which made her cough violently and took a lot of attention in the cafeteria as a new intern who just recently joined the program ran to their table

"Can I help?" He asked

"I'm fine" Meredith said as Derek rubbed her back

"Doctor Shepherd, I have some questions-" The intern started

"I'm busy" Derek replied

"But doctor Shepherd, it's really-"

"Is someone dying?" Derek asked

The intern frowned "No sir, why would you think so?" He asked

"Because you're interrupting my lunch with my wife and daughter after I told you to leave us alone" Derek said

"Wife?" He asked as he looked down at Meredith, sitting in her wheelchair

"Yes, wife. Do you have any problems with that?" Derek asked

"No, sir.. but.. yeah" The intern kept going

"So you're judging my wife because of the fact she's in a wheelchair?" Derek asked

"I'm sorry, sir"

"You should say sorry to my wife!" Derek raised his voice as he noticed Bailey heard the whole thing

"I'm sorry miss Shepherd" The intern said

"It's doctor Grey" Meredith spat out

"You can go do rectal exams!" Bailey yelled as she joined the family

"Idiot" Meredith muttered but turned her attention back to Zola before thanking Bailey "Thanks Miranda"

"No problem, Meredith.. He'll be punished, don't worry" Bailey said with a smile as she walked away to get herself some food before joining the family during lunch and as they sat there, some other friends joined them.
