"Mum! I can't find my other shoe, I'm gonna be late!"
I sigh and roll over in my bed to try and go back to sleep, opening my eyes just enough to read the clock on my nightstand. Eight in the morning? Too early, I think as I curl up under the blankets. Footsteps stampeded towards my room and the door is thrown open, and I hear an exasperated groan.
"You're still sleeping? I won't even make the bloody train at this point," my daughter whines.
"Mind your language, Jade," I yawn without looking up at her. She suddenly launches herself onto the bed and lands on top of me, and for a moment I'm certain one of us broke a bone or two. Jade giggles hysterically and pulls the blankets off me, shaking my arm and bouncing up and down.
"Come on, come on, get up! It's my first year. You promised you'd go with me to the station and see me off. And you said Uncle Rory and my cousins would be there too, and we can't be late!" she spewed.
"No, that's what your mama promised, not me," I corrected her, and when I roll over towards her I touch the tight cornrows in her hair and the round, light green beads at the end of her plaits. Light green was her favorite color, which was fitting considering her name.
"She did a good job on your hair," I remark, which makes her beam.
"It's better every time," she said. "I'll fetch her right now if you'd like and she'll wake you up." That was all the incentive I needed to sit up and rub the sleep from my eyes.
"I think you'd better not," I said as she tumbled off the other side of my bed. I look over at the door to see Luna in the doorway with a half-smile on her face.
"Better not what?" she asks, looking between Jade and I.
"Better not let mum sleep and make me late," Jade smirked. Luna gestured out the door and down the hallway, to where Jade's bedroom was.
"Go find that other shoe, then. I'm opening a portkey at half-past," she said.
"Yes, mama," Jade said on her way out the door. Luna looked off after her and then she walked over to the bed and sat down next to me, and I can't help but think about how I wound up with the two most amazing people in the whole world.
The Hogsmeade fire was almost 13 years ago, and everyone agreed that Luna's recovery was nothing short of a miracle. They thought she'd never be able to get around normally because of her injuries, but by the end of the month she had started to walk again, and shortly after that she was responding to her treatment so well that she was discharged. I remember taking her homework to her at the end of every day and sometimes spending the night in the hospital wing with her, and I was there so often that at meal times they would bring two trays of food in the room instead of just one.
Eventually, though, she did heal and we both went on to finish our time at Hogwarts, along with Rory and Ced and Cora and the twins. Fred and George never married, but they started their own shop that sold prank supplies, which surprised absolutely nobody. Cora went on to open her own bakery in Hogsmeade like she always talked about, and she told us that she always gave a few extra cookies to the Hogwarts students that came in. Rory had become a muggle expert in the Ministry of Magic and he married a Hufflepuff named Piper, with whom he had two sons that Jade called cousins (even though none of us were related by blood). Cedric never lost his love for herbology, and he's been teaching it at Hogwarts for six years now. For the whole summer Jade spoke of almost nothing else except being in Uncle Ced's herbology class.
As for Luna and I, we married as soon as we were able. My mother did, in fact, go shopping for two wedding dresses just like she said she would so many years ago, and a few years later we bought a little cottage that sort of reminded me of Luna's house and we adopted Jade from a wizarding orphanage. Luna inherited her father's magazine and published new copies every other week, and there was nothing she loved more than sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and a pen and paper, humming softly to herself as she wrote down things to include in the next edition. I didn't really have a job, and it was a lucky thing that I didn't need one because Luna earned enough with her magazine to support all three of us.
Even besides that, it was bittersweet to see Jade go. I remember so vividly how I felt when I took my first train ride at her age, the day I met the person who would change my life on the Hogwarts Express because there was nowhere else to sit. I can still hear 12-year-old Luna's voice in my head telling me about new adventures, and thinking of seeing Jade embark on one of her own made my heart feel full. Who knows, maybe today she'll meet people who will change her life too.
"Any lights on upstairs?" she giggled, nudging my arm. I snap back to the present and realize that I'd just been staring off into space for a long time.
"Yeah, sorry," I said, and she swings her legs that hang over the edge of our bed.
"What were you thinking about?" she asks softly.
"How lucky I am to have you," I murmur in response, pressing a kiss to her face.
"Hm. I think about that same thing every day," she said with a smile. I heard Jade running towards our room once again, but this time she passed by with her trolley and her new owl.
"I found my shoe, can we please go now? It's almost half past," she groaned. Luna leaned in close to my face and I felt her warm hand close around mine.
"Mustn't keep them waiting," she whispered as she took out her wand. We all join hands, and as we all become surrounded by blue smoke I close my eyes and smile.
I realized that the wish I made on my 16th birthday had finally come true.
Dear Reader,
