Duskpaw arrived at camp just as the sun started to set. "Duskpaw, there you are! I've been waiting for you all day! I'm over by Cuttree." Smokepaw called out from her location while sitting with the other apprentices. Her whiskers were quivering with impatience, and the fur along her spine was bristling. Duskpaw started to head over to his sister before a pang of hunger hit his belly. Then, he turned towards the fresh-kill pile causing Smokepaw's tail to drop to the ground loud enough for Duskpaw to hear. Twitching his ears hoping Smokepaw would be able to notice, he went over to the fresh-kill pile and picked up a shrew before heading over to his sister.

"How was the patrol?"

"It was like an adventure! Smokepaw's eyes gleamed with excitement. "I managed to catch a glimpse of a Hailclan warrior. Their territory is frosted over so early and their pelts are so thick!"

"Did you manage to snag any of their fur? It'd probably be a great lining for a nest."

"No I didn't mouse brain! They are so huge with all that fur and besides they were in their own territory. I'm not going to start a fight in another cat's territory just to get a few tufts of fur. I haven't even learned to fight yet!"

"So, how was your day? Surely you did something since you were out for so long."

Duskpaw sighed, "I spent all day working on my hunting."

"Did you catch anything?"

"I almost got a mouse. Unfortunately, I over jumped."

We can just pretend that you caught this shrew that we're eating." Warmth engulfed Duskpaw's heart. He bent his head down to take another strip of its flesh, bumping his nose against his sister's fur when sitting back up. Smokepaw's whiskers twitched, but nevertheless her eyes continued to shine just as brightly as before. Her naive optimism was often comforting, although Duskpaw had to admit that he did get irritated by it sometimes. Especially since he knew how she was when she used her head for once which more often than not he wished that she would do more often. He was startled as  Smokepaw brushed her cheek fur against Duskpaw's, eyes full of determination. "We'll always protect each other. No matter what the situation is, we'll fight side by side," she vowed, and Duskpaw repeated the words to his sister.
