She sat beside Thor at the bar as Selvig got the drinks for them. They were more or less acquainted by now and although they were soulmates that were complete strangers it somehow didn't feel like it.

"I had it all backwards," he suddenly spoke. "I had it all wrong."

"What did you have wrong?" Maddie softly asked.

"Everything."

"It's not a bad thing to sometimes be wrong," she said. "It doesn't make us any weaker not knowing things it just means we have room to improve and learn."

"For the first time in my life, uh... I have no idea," he looked at her, "what I'm supposed to do."

"That's okay," she reassured him. "I never know what I'm supposed to do. I just do what I feel and go from there."

He smiled at her and she couldn't help but smile back.

"I honestly don't understand," Thor confessed. "Everything I am, everything I've ever known it's all tumbling down around me and then..."

"Then what?" Maddie asked, softly laughing at how serious he was being.

"I was banished down to Midgard as a punishment," he explained. "But then I met you, my soulmate. I now see colors and I can't help but think somehow my punishment-"

"Isn't really a punishment?" she guessed and he nodded. They sat staring at each other for a few seconds before she spoke again. "Thor, why were you banished? What did you do that your father wants to punish you like this?"

"I wasn't ready to become king," he sadly said. "He wanted me to learn a lesson."

"That's excessive," she muttered.

"Here," Selvig said as he reappeared with three large beers. "Drink up!"

"Thank you," Thor honestly thanked the man, despite refusing his help in the beginning.

"No, don't thank me," he shook his head. "I only did it for Jane."

"Jane Foster?" Maddie asked.

"Yes," Selvig defensively said. "How do you know her? Or should I ask how does that faceless organization of yours know her?"

"Wow, Doctor you really have something against us, don't you?" she questioned amused, but he just shrugged clearly not amused. "My uncle knows her actually, they went to college together."

"Really?" Selvig asked in surprise.

"Yeah, he was studying to be a lawyer," Maddie explained. "It was a long time ago and a long story."

"Indeed," the doctor agreed with a sigh and a swig of his drink. "Her father and I taught at university together. He was a good man. He never listened though."

"Neither did I," Thor admitted. "My father was trying to teach me something and I was too stupid to listen."

"That what fathers and children do," Maddie commented. "It's just the way of life. We learn as we get older, only time and experience can change how we think and portray things."

"She's not wrong," Selvig agreed, turning in his chair to face them. He then looked solely at Thor. "I don't know if you're delusional or if you're pulling some kind of con. I don't care," he said making Maddie frown while Thor just listened. "I just care about Jane. I see the way she looks at you."

Thor glanced over at Maddie, who deliberately looked down pretending to be more interested in her drink than the actual conversation.

It was a now or never thing.

Soulmates were on a different level to every other kind of relationship in the world. It all depended on the people and the people alone. Most can't stand being apart from their soulmates while others find it easier to just be friends.

A lot was involved in making that decision including; time, patience, understanding, as well as how well their personalities mixed together. And so far, Maddie and Thor were getting along great right up until Jane's name was brought up being the exact thing to make or break what would happen for them.

"I, uh," Thor looked back at Selvig. "I swear to you I mean her no harm, Erik. But she and I are not possible since I have found my soulmate."

"Oh God," Maddie murmured, downing her beer.

"You have?" he stared at Thor, his brows furrowed.

"Yes," Thor replied. "That is why I refused to leave without her."

Selvig looked from Thor to Maddie and back again before realization set in, leaving him in a slight shock. "Her?" he pointed to Maddie, "that's why you... wow! Well, congratulations and in that case, I'll buy you both another round. Then you leave town tonight," he warned not wanting Jane to go through any pain or unhappiness because of the two.

Thor seemed taken aback for a second before he obediently nodded, not seeing the problem. Even though he had no idea what his life now held, he at least found his soulmate.

"Great," Selvig said. He turned back to the bartender, "another three."

Maddie held her hand up. "Can I get a bottle of whiskey?"

"Whiskey on the rocks?" the bartender asked, looking slightly confused.

"Oh no, just give me the whole bottle," she smiled sweetly and hesitantly the man did as he was told, "thanks."

"Some of the heavier stuff, eh?" Selvig questioned. "Alright, I'm game."

Maddie laughed. "You boys have your beer this is mine."

Shocked wasn't nearly the right expression covering Selvig's face and surprised wasn't exactly the term Thor would use for what he was feeling.

"What a girl you've gotten yourself," Selvig finally commented, now smiling as he started to drink his beer.

"Are you sure that is wise?" Thor gently questioned as Maddie unscrewed the top and took a quick sip.

"Yeah, I've got a high tolerance," she reassured.

Which wasn't a lie. She grew up with a dad who drank more beer than anything else and a father who was an angel that couldn't possibly get drunk unless he downed gallons, so to say she was pretty safe was the truth.
