When you were here (Newt love story)

Chapter 2

I woke up to the sound of birds tweeting and chirping, the sun fading into the room through the window. I look to the table beside me and find some breakfast with a note beside it.

"I thought you'd want to eat breakfast alone before having to face everyone. I hope you like it. Newt"

As I slowly read the letter I couldn't help but feel a slight warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach. Who was this Newt guy and is he nice like Chuck?

I ate the bacon and scrambled eggs in a heartbeat, it was if I had never eaten before. Every bite of the food making me feel better and better.

I finally had the courage to get out of bed and get dressed. I wasn't really sure how the day was going to go but all I knew was that it wasn't going to be boring, I just hoped that I wouldn't have to deal with Gally. He was the last person I wanted to see.

Once I was dressed I heard a slight knock at the door. I opened it and stood there was Alby, clearly here to start my tour of the glade.

"Hey Chuck told me your name is Jade?" Alby questioned. I was surprised he already knew but I guess things travel fast around here.

"Yeah it is" I answered shyly.

"Well I'm here to give you the tour of the glade. Are you ready to go?" 

"As ready as I'll ever be I guess" I replied. 

As we left the medical area I was able to take in the beautiful scenery and the ginormous walls that surrounded us on all sides. The vines only reaching about halfway up the walls. Probably to stop us from climbing all the way up there.

"So we have a few rules here but the main one is never, ever leave the glade. Leaving is strictly forbidden and anyone found having left will be punished" Alby stated. This made me wonder why we weren't allowed and what was beyond them. 

Alby finished up the tour and said that I am to try a few jobs to see where I fit best. I wasn't sure what jobs there were to do when you are surrounded by walls, but clearly there were. As me and Alby were heading towards the kitchen to visit the cooks, I saw out of the corner of my eye people entering the glade from the maze. I thought people weren't allowed to enter the maze so what were they doing?

"Hey Alby?"

"Yeah Jade what's up?"

"I thought we weren't allowed to leave the glade, so why are people coming in from the maze?"

"Ah well those people over there are your runners, they are the people that go through the maze everyday trying to find a way out of this place. They map every corner and turn and write it down, making sure that they are able to remember every detail about where they are. They are the only ones allowed to leave" Alby informed me. 

Even though Alby explained it, I still didn't believe it was fair. If they could go out then why can't I?

I watched them all come back into the glade one by one. Each one looking tired and worn out, I suppose that's what happens when you run all day.

It was finally time for dinner. As I waited in the queue for dinner I as left thinking to myself. I'm all alone, sure I have all the other gladers but not all of them seem to be welcoming. As I reached the front of the line I met a boy named Frypan. He was probably just as nice as Chuck and he seemed more understanding then Gally, that's for sure. 

Frypan gave me a plate of food and I was left standing there trying to find a place to sit, but unsure of who was welcoming and who wasn't.

That's when I heard a voice.

"Hey greenie, come sit with us here." The voice sounding much nicer then Gally.

The voice came from a boy a similar age as me, roughly 17, he had silky blonde hair and pale skin. On the table with him seemed to be Chuck and two other people that I saw coming in from the maze.

I walked over and sat down. Once I was sat down I couldn't help but feel nervous, everyone sat at the table started to look at me. 

"I'm Newt by the way." One of them said to me kindly.

"Hey I'm Jade, it's nice to meet you all" I couldn't help but twiddle with my fingers, this was a habit that I couldn't get rid of.

"I'm Minho" said one of the boys I was unsure of. Minho was tall and muscular, you could tell he was very fit and healthy.

"And I'm Thomas" Replied the other one.

"So how's your second day been here Jade?" Newt asked. 

I wasn't sure how I should reply, I didn't want to admit that I hadn't spoken to anyone other than Alby before dinner. But I got this weird feeling from Newt that I knew I could trust him. So I let all my feelings out.

"Its been a really tough two day, I guess I've just kinda felt left out. Everyone just stares at me, it's like I'm not even a person" I finally answered.

"It gets easier you just have to wait" Newt said.

I hope he's right because I'm not sure how much longer I can deal with this atmosphere engulfing me.

Once everyone had finished dinner it was just me and Newt left at the table, I was just about to get up and leave when Newt said.

"Hey Jade I know something that will make you feel better, follow me"

I couldn't turn him down there wasn't many people offering to spend time with me so I guess this was my only plan. So I said yes.

Newt took me far away from the crowds of the glade and too a more secluded spot. We laid down on the grass and started star gazing. I never knew how peaceful this felt until I was there just looking up at the sky in silence. I decided to break the silence.

"Do people ever end up remembering who they were before they came here? I asked letting curiosity get the best of me.

"No, at least they don't remember anything too serious" Newt replied.

We sat there in silence for a couple minutes again. Looking up at the sky, when I saw the stars I forgot about all my worries. It is like they just faded away.
