As Melissa walked inside the house she lived in, she saw her husband sitting down on the couch. He was watching tv, and Melissa quickly noticed the bottle of scotch in front of him while he had a glass in his hand, she knew she was screwed.

Melissa put the keys on the key holder making them bump against each other, making Blake turn around to look at Melissa. He got up and started walking towards Melissa as she placed her purse down. Once in front or her, Blake leaned down and kissed Melissa's lips, making the girl shiver under his touch, not in a good way.

"Okay, I'm hungry so make me some food." Blake demanded, getting right into the point.

"Blake, I'm tired. I had a long day at work today." Melissa sighed, running her fingers through her hair, pushing hair out of her face.

"I don't care if you had a long day." Blake scrunched up this face. "I'm hungry, so you're going to make me something to eat. Now go before I make you regret it." Blake spat out.

"B-Blake, please. I'm beg-" Melissa was cut short by a strong force coming from him and against her face.

Melissa quickly held her hand onto her face and held it there, hoping the pain would go away as fast as it came, holding her tears back.

"Now, you will make me dinner before I give you another copy of my hand on the other side of your face." His face was flushed with anger.

Melissa quickly nodded, shakily walking towards the kitchen and finally but silently letting her tears fall down.

As the tears fell down, Melissa wished for the pain to go away. Not just her physical pain, but her mental pain too. She was extremely exhausted from the abuse. She wanted everything to stop. She didn't exactly want to die, but she wanted to not hurt anymore.

Melissa wanted to be that person again. The one that laughed uncontrollably, smiled, made jokes. The one who was able to explore the world without worrying. And the one who would be stuck in the library for hours on the weekends.

She just wanted her life back.

Later that night...

As Melissa laid in bed starting at the ceiling she felt the bed dip besides her. She turned to her side, facing the wall and closing her eyes. Blake wrapped an arm around her waist making Melissa take a silent deep breath.

Melissa knew that he was now calm and sober so she knew she was going to be okay...for now at least. See, Melissa memorized his actions, tone, the way his face changed, and the way his eyes looked for the times he got aggressive. And over the years she's come to know that at night, in bed, he never did any harm to her.

"Babe?" Blake asked softly, it almost made Melissa take back all the things he did earlier.

"Yes..." Melissa responded hesitantly.

"Do you remember our first date?" He asked and Melissa humed in response. "It was perfect. We went to the movie theater and watched a movie together. You even fell asleep with your head on my shoulder. I miss those times, the ones where you were actually nice."

He had to ruin the small moment of peace Melissa was getting with something like that. He had his ways of turning things around and making himself the victim. He would blame Melissa as a cause of him lashing out and hitting her, but in reality it wasn't her fault, even though she's started to believe it was.

"Yeah, sorry about that. I've been stressed with work and everything." She lied.

To be honest, work made her feel better. She was surrounded by people she knew wouldn't harm her in any way. Although she was a bit hesitant about the guys at first, she became comfortable around them once she learned they're good people.

Especially the green eyed lady.

For some weird reason Melissa felt like they could be great friends and that she could confide in her. Katie gave those warm home-y feelings. Like the ones from the movies where the home is filled with books, plants, and comforting things.

"Good night, Melissa." Blake whispered into the darkness.

"Good night." Melissa murmured back.

Melissa couldn't go to sleep. Her head was full with thoughts about the things she could've done to prevent this part of her life, as she liked to call it "Hell on Earth". She honestly felt like a bird trapped in a cage or a puppet.
