1

And Avram went up from Miżrayim, he and his wife and all that was with him, and Lot with him to the south [of Eretz Yisrael].

2

And Avram was very heavy, with kine, with silver and with gold.

3

And Avram went up out of Miżrayim, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negev.

4

To the place of the altar which he had made there at first, where Avram had called upon the name of the L-rd.

5

And also unto Lot, who went with Avram [— because he went with Avram] there were flocks and herds, and tents.

6

And the [pasturage of the] land did not suffice for them to dwell together, for their substance was great, and they could not dwell together.

7

And there was a dispute between Avram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen [the former rebuking the latter for allowing their flocks to grace in others' fields, the latter arguing that there was no theft in this in that the land belonged to Lot, Avram's sole heir.] But [(states Scripture)] the Kena'ani and the Perizi then dwelt in the land, [so that Avram not yet having taken possession of the land, the practice of Lot's herdsmen did, indeed, constitute theft.]

8

And Avram said to Lot: Let there not be a dispute between me and you, and between my herdsmen and yours, for we are kinsmen.

9

Is not the whole land before you? Part, I pray you, from me. If you go to the left, I will be at your right [to defend you]; and if you go to the right, I will be at your left.

10

And Lot lifted his eyes and saw the whole plain of the Yarden, it being all watered [with streams]. Before the L-rd destroyed Sodom and Amorah, it was like the Garden of the L-rd, like the land of Miżrayim [for sowing] until Tzoar.

11

And Lot chose for himself the entire plain of the Yarden, and Lot traveled from the east [of Avram, going west], and they parted, one from the other.

12

Avram dwelt in the land of Kena'an, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain, and he pitched tents [for his herdsmen and his herds] until Sodom.

13

And the people of Sodom Now the inhabitants of Sodom were very wicked sinners against the L-rd

[ואנשי סדום רעים BUT THE MEN OF SODOM WERE WICKED, and yet Lot did not refrain from living with them. Our Rabbis learned from here how the text (Mishlei 10:11) "and the name of the wicked shall rot" should be applied (Yoma 38b). רעים WICKED in their persons וחטאים AND SINNERS with their wealth (Sanhedrin 109a)]

14

And the L-rd said to Avram after Lot departed from him: Raise your eyes, now, and see, from the place where you are — north, south, east, and west.

15

For all the land that you see, to you shall I give it, and to your seed forever.

16

And I shall make your seed as the dust of the earth — so that just as the dust of the earth cannot be counted, so your seed will not be counted.

17

Arise, walk in the land, in its length and its breadth, for to you shall I give it.

18

וַיֶּאֱהַ֣ל אַבְרָ֗ם וַיָּבֹ֛א וַיֵּ֛שֶׁב בְּאֵלֹנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן וַיִּֽבֶן־שָׁ֥ם מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

And Avram pitched his tent, and he came and he dwelt in the plains of [the man] Mamre, in Chevron, and he built there an altar to the L-rd.
