Steve woke up to the sound of someone knocking insistently on his front door.
"Coming"
Steve opened the door just in his boxers rubbing his eyes.
"Get dressed. NOW"
"Nice to see you too, Tones"
Tony pushed Steve back and walked into his house, heading to his bedroom. Tony opened Steve's wardrobe, towing a bunch of clothes on the bed.
"Put them on"
Steve yawned. "Why?"
"We're super late. We had to be there like yesterday"
Steve jumped up.
"Is it today?"
"Yes, now move your pretty ass"
Tony sat in his car waiting for Steve with a coffee and a danish.
"Really? You chose the least family friendly car you own"
Tony rolled his eyes and started the car.
"It will get us there"Steve held the door open for Tony as they walked into the orphanage.
"You're late" the cranky lady warned them.
A nice lady was waiting for them with a huge binder in her arms.
"Mr Stark, Mr Rogers, follow me please"
Steve and Tony looked at each other and followed the woman to a big conference room.
The woman had olive skin and caramel wavy hair. She was wearing a black suit with an emerald green shirt with a ribbon on the neck.
She laid the binders on the old wooden table as Steve and Tony took place in front of her.
"I'm Natalie Torres from social services. I'll be handling your adoption process"
Steve and Tony shook her hand.
"Mr Stark, Mr Rogers, I've put together some information about you" she said pointing to the binders.
"Mr Stark-"
"Call me Tony"
"Well, Tony. You're the head of Stark international-"
"That's not exactly true, I stepped down a few years back, now I just...invent"
"That sounds dangerous. And very time consuming"
"No, it isn't. I work in my lab at the tower when I'm inspires"
Steve knows that Tony stays in the lab for entire days without sleeping and surviving only out of coffee. But this was something that the social service lady didn't need to know.
She started writing in Tony's binder and the couple looked at each other.
"And you, Mr Rogers, you are an Army Captain"
Steve nodded.
"You made several tours, right?"
"Yes, three"
"And now..."
"Now I was discharged with two medals of honour"
Natalie kept writing, in Steve's binder this time.
"Ok, now about you two as a couple"
Steve nodded as Tony took his hand, with a glimpse of terror in his eyes. They didn't rehearse a story, meaning that they would have to rely on their ability to synchronise their brains. The problem was, Steve hated liars and definitely couldn't act. Everyone could tell when he was lying.
The only thing to do was hope that Tony would take charge. Tony, on the other hand, was great at acting. He didn't have any choice, he was thrown in a world where the truth is better kept hidden.
"Where did you two meet?"
"School" they both said.
It was technically not a lie. They met when they were kids, many years before, when Tony's Aunt Peggy was fostering Steve after his parents died. Toy hated Steve, even if he was even barely capable of understanding what it meant. He just knew that he took his Aunty away from him.
They met in school, years later when Tony was a senior, because he was part of a tutoring program for whoever needed it. Steve was a freshman with big problems in any scientific subject and Tony became his tutor. When he found out that he was Aunt's Peggy Steve, he felt something in his guts they brought him to resent Steve, for some reasons. Eventually, they became friends because of Natasha and now he couldn't believe that there was a time where he had hoped with every living cell of his body for Steve to magically walk out of his life.
"Alright. And when did you become a couple?"
Tony eyed Steve and the lady looked at them, perplexed and confused.
"We got together 7 years ago for the first but it didn't work out, we tried again 3 years ago, now we're inseparable" Tony intertwined his hand with Steve's "Apparently, for my man here, it was never over" He said, winking at the lady and kicking Steve on the shin under the table.
"I understand. And why didn't it work out?"
Tony opened his mouth but Steve cut him before he could talk.
"I got deployed overseas"
The lady looked at Steve.
"Could something like that happen again?"
"No ma'am, I have no plans of going back to the Army"
She nodded and kept writing.
"And why did you decide to try it again?"
Tony squeezed Seve's hand.
"We couldn't stay away from each other. I pretended to be mad for a while. But, you know, like a magnet, we got used back together"
Steve smiled, nodding.
"Ok, where was your first date when you got back together?"
"The movies"
"We went to the park"
The lady raised her eyes from the binder and Tony kicked Steve again on the leg.
"We went to the movies and then to the park. He's old fashioned, y'know"
"I heard that you got married just before coming in to adopt. Why is that?"
"Oh well, we'd never spoken about wedding" Tony spoke before Steve could even open his mouth. "But kids were in the picture and we figured that getting married would make everything easier"
Steve put his hand on Tony's knee.
"He's always wanted to be a father"
"And you, Mr Rogers, have you always wanted a kid too?"
"Uhm no, not really. But I can definitely see a family with Tony"
Torres kept writing stuff in her binder, which Tony felt incredibly annoying.
"Talking about your past, how was your relationship with your parents?"
Tony shifted on the chair, visibly uncomfortable. Steve looked at him and took his hand and gently squeezed it. From the outside, it was just a lovely gesture between husbands, but Tony knew the nature of it. It was Steve, his best friend, checking on him.
"Let's just say, they weren't around much when I was a kid" Tony said with a broken voice.
"Will they be around for the baby?"
Tony's eyes filled with tears as he shook his head and squeezed Steve's hand, asking to back him up.
"Our parents- uhm- our parents won't be around at all"
The woman whispered a little 'sorry', writing on her binder.
"Are you ok?" taking advantage of the moment when she was not looking, Steve mouthed to Tony, who nodded, wiping away the tears from his eyes.As soon as he could, Tony walked out of the orphanage and sat on the steps. He didn't even want to talk to Steve when he followed him out. Steve helped Tony stand up and walked him to the car. Tony let Steve handle his body and help him get into the passenger seat. Steve took the keys from Tony's hand and started the car, knowing damn well that Tony never let anyone drive. But Tony's body was frozen and his brain was numb. He never liked being asked about his parents, but he knew that it was completely necessary for the adoption process.
Steve took the eyes off the street and looked at Tony. He caressed his tight and Tony put his hand over Steve's.
"You ok?"
Tony let the heat from Seve's hand spread to his body, waiting for his brain to get back to normal. It happened more often than he wanted to admit and Steve was the only one who could bring him back.
Tony nodded.
"What the hell happened to our brain synchrony in there?"
Steve scoffed, squeezing his knee, before taking it away to change the gear and put all of his focus on the road and on not trashing Tony's precious car.
