Despite the Darkness

On one quiet night

Along the streets clogged with the wretched and the lonesome

Where city lights flicker out amongst the silent grey fog

Where wind whispers of a downtrodden dream

And I stand amongst them, the masses of the hopeless, the existing

Ambling aimlessly along winding paths that never reach a horizon

Trapped breathing- no, suffocating- in the thick haze of apathy

And I stand amongst them----

Trudging through the dark gutters of empty years and wasted moments

Staring upwards through the clouded sky

Searching for a star, a beacon, some faint spark of

Meaning

The meaning of my life

To dance, despite the judgment of the crowd

To run, despite all mountains before my feet

To care, despite every instance the world turned aside

To smile, despite the burden carried on my shoulders

To risk, despite the warm allure of the known

To love, despite inevitable nothingness, and all who caution otherwise

To wonder, despite every cage that dares to confine me

To dream, despite entrapment within labels and definitions

To succeed, despite every naysayer with a malicious mantra

To create, despite the emptiness of the void

To feel, despite the numbness that grasps at my spirit

To hope, despite the faintness of the stars that glimmer above

To be, despite the darkness

And to live, despite every challenge the universe throws my way.
