Chapter 02

       Of course, before Aaliyah had appeared in front of the Empress, the lady-in-waiting had some commoner maids adequately prepare the child.

      As Aaliyah followed several respectful paces behind the lady-in-waiting, a layer of slick sweat formed on the palms of her hands. She thought about on why the Empress had directly summoned her. Then she had recalled what she had first done on arriving to the palace. She was sure that if the Empress had wished for her to be punished for vomiting on palace grounds, she didn't need to summon her, let alone send one of her ladies-in-waiting, she could've just pulled anyone to the side and tell them to punish her in her name.

     But then again who was she to know how royals thought? She had never met a royal in this life, let alone one in her previous life.

'1, 2, 3, 4, 5....' Aaliyah commenced to count in her mind to soothe her nerves somewhat.

     Soon they came upon the Empress' reception room. The two guards who stood outside the reception room opened its grand doors and announced who was entering.

       Once Aaliyah proceeded to step into the room, the first thing she had noticed was the lighten. It was a little bit brighter in the room, causing her pupils to constrict. Then the second thing she had noticed was the aroma of perfume oils and makeup. The scent mixture wasn't that strong. The scent mixture was at least better than the one in the lounge room her grandmother and step-mother liked to occupy, pretending that they were still high-ranking nobles.

       She noticed the Empress, a very beautiful woman with silky curly black hair decorated in pearl accessories and brown eyes protected by long black butterfly-like eyelashes. She was dressed in an elegant dark purple gown, befitting of her title.

      Three other women were dressed more plainly than the Empress, but the way they were dressed couldn't hide their air of nobility.

"Your Majesty, I have brought Aaliyah Drusus as you have requested." The noble woman reported.

      All eyes were on Aaliyah. The child counted to three then took a deep breath in and out, curtsying. "Blessings and glory upon the Obelian Empire."

       The girl was glad that she had snuck peaks in the past when her two younger sisters had been learning etiquette. Her little sisters had especially liked to curtsy at each other, pretending that they had been greeting royalty for when they would surely meet a member of the royal family.

"Viscount Brusus' first daughter, Aaliyah Drusus." The Empress spoke, closing her decorative fan. "You may raise your head."

      Aaliyah did just that, standing straight. "Thank you, your majesty." She said a word of gratitude just in case.

     Studying the child, the imperial commented. "So young. What was the Viscountess thinking of sending such a young child who has not even have her debut yet to work in the palace?"

      Those of noble lineage usually worked in the palace, but young children of noble lineage usually did not, especially before they had turned fourteen. The youngest if they had to be sent was at least around the ages of ten-twelve.

        Too bad when she had reincarnated into this world, she had been born into a Cinderella-like family. Her father had married a step-mother, later giving her two half-siblings. Then her father had died before she had barely turned four. Her step-mother, half-siblings and especially her biological paternal grandmother despised her.

       Her grandmother and step-mother had forcibly sent her here after sending an application for her to work at the palace, no matter how much she had cried and begged that she would be a good girl and work extra hard to do her chores. The only thing they had said was that she should feel honoured in working in the palace no matter how lowly the job. They basically didn't want to raise her and had wanted to send her to death without getting their hands dirtied. Or even if they didn't want her to die, they would wish for her to live an agonizing life.
