I call her back instantly.
"What is going on, Anna? You're not actually—"
"If— if Sophia Garez calls you, promise me you won't answer. Not until we've spoken, alright?"
"Sophia Garez?" I frown, perching on the end of the bed tentatively. The water continues to run in the bathroom as I hear Holden singing.
"Promise me," she says, urgently. "I want to explain first, okay?"
"Explain what? Anna, what is going on?"
"I'm sorry," she gasps, holding back tears. "I shouldn't have done it, but I want to be able to explain in person why—"
My phone vibrates and I take it from my ear, noting the caller ID. "She's calling me now," I frown, interrupting Anna.
"Don't answer," she sniffs. "I'll be there in less than ten."
"How do you even know where—"
"Soph told— Sophia told me."
I rub my forehead, feeling an oncoming headache growing. "You're confusing me."
"It'll all become clear soon," she sighs, "I'm almost there. Meet me outside, alright?"
She hangs up suddenly, leaving me alone in silence. I stare down at my phone, noticing the slightest shake in my hand.
"Somerton!" Holden calls from the bathroom, making me jump. "Want to put another movie on? I'll be out soon!"
The credits for The Breakfast Club roll across the screen as I stare numbly at it. "Y—yes. I've just gotta go see...Brooks. He called asking about something."
"Brooks called you?"
"Yeah," I stand from the bed, reaching for my sneakers. I throw on a hoodie, covering my fresh pyjamas. "I'll be back soon."
"Wait a few minutes, I'll go with—"
"I won't be long," I shout over him, shutting the door behind me.
I don't know why I feel the urge to lie to him. Something about this situation just doesn't feel right and I don't need him to worry right now, not when everything finally feels perfect.
I land on the last step, almost barging right into Ben. He barely acknowledges my presence as he runs past me, up the stairs.
It throws me off guard, causing my growing panic to consume me. I can feel my hands beginning to shake as I walk through the lounge room and kitchen, pressing the button to open the door.
I spot Anna's car in the parking lot; her headlights blinding me. I stuff my hands into the pockets of my hoodie, squinting against the light as I reach for the passenger side.
