The * means that the chapter takes place in the past. This is the first time Mai ever met Jake and the boys, so a glimpse of what things used to be like between them. Or at least how it started. The cover picture is Jake and Samuel facing off before their fight.

I walk through an alley quickly, fixing my school uniform skirt as it rode up my legs. I was almost running, hands reaching up to loosen my tie around my neck. My dark hair was pulled into a high ponytail, with my sleeves rolled to my elbows as I prepare for a fight.
Sinu had told me that there was a middle school crew battle going down on Big Deal territory and there was two boys that he was looking in on recruiting. Jake Kim and Samuel Seo. They were both sixteen, a year or so older than me. The way Sinu talked about them got me excited, a pep in my step as I turn the corner into the street that Sinu had told me about, right in Big Deal's backyard.
My feet stop when I see I gotten here a little late, the groups already getting here. The large bald group of Guryong High, the long haired group of Jungmok High, the weapon heavy Jinma High, and Jake Kim and with the company of Gangseo Middle school.

My eyes scan the street as I sneak closer, searching for the leader of the Highschool Gangs, Samuel Seo. My eyes land on a boy walking through the crowd, wearing a red suit, his black hair long on the top and shaved at the sides. I take in the emptiness of his black eyes, blinking as I scan his handsome face. This had to be him, with that calculating look in his eyes. He almost reminded me of Gun, aside from how empty his eyes were. Gun was never that empty.
"I thought about why I wasn't acknowledged. The answer was simple. I took over all the highschools in Gangseo, but I forgot to take over the middle schools." Samuel stops in front of Jake Kim, a tall boy wearing a dark grey jacket and a white shirt, his hair push back. Samuel wore a smile as Jake wore nothing to give away his emotions. "So that's what I'm going to do from here on out. Are you Jake Kim?"
"He is." Jake answers quickly, face blank as he points to the man on his left. The one on his left was Jason Yoon and the one on his right was Brad Lee, both second years. I quickly cover my mouth, stuffing my laugh before I made a noise. What kind of leader throws his men under the bus like that?
"Aww! Come on Jake!" Jason says, glaring at him. Brad, on Jake's other side, decides to speak up.
"We aren't who you're looking for. We aren't from Gangseo Middle School." He says, facial expression completely serious. I blink, wandering where he was going with this... "We are from Gangseo Girl's Middle School. We're girls, dreaming of becoming nail artists."
"Yes, my friend Brenda is right." Jake says, going along with it. My face instantly lights up and I beam at them. That's actually freaking awesome, totally hilarious. I actually liked them already. "My name is Jane Kim, not Jake Kim."
"Brenda! Jane! I've been looking all over for you girls!" I call out to join in, everyone's eyes instantly finding me as I walk toward them. I smile brightly, ignoring that I was the only female in this whole area. I beam at Jake and 'Brenda' waving at them.
"I told you that we were supposed to meet up at the salon! What are you doing wasting your time with these boys? Boy's won't get you anywhere in life, Brenda. Exspecialy after what happened with Henry. He wasn't good enough for you, baby. Let's get over it together." 'Brenda' nods, wiping his eyes as he acts. I watch as he contains his smile.
"I know, baby... It's just so hard." He says, shaking his head. I reach up and pat his back, rubbing it soothingly.
"There, there, baby. Let's go practice at the salon to get you mind off of things. We can work on the French manicure, just like you like to..." I look up at Samuel, who watches us unamused. This is another reason why he is different from Gun. Gun would have laughed, exspecialy if I was involved in the act. Goo would have died. "Sorry, but my friend here just went through a really bad break up and it's not good for her to be around hot guys. We've got to go before she falls in love with you... Jane, be a doll and grab my purse. We need to get Brenda's calming spray. She's going to have a panic attack again. Get the lavender stuff, the strongest version."
Jake looks at me with humor bright in his eyes and I wink, putting my hands on my hips as Samuel shrugs off his coat jacket, handing it to the short boy beside him. I watch as he slides on a brass knuckle, making me roll my eyes. Always with the weapons. Reason number three now, isn't it? Gun's not into weapons.
"Sorry. I don't like jokes." Samuel says, walking towards us. He keeps his attention on Jake, not even really looking at me. Mistake number one, big guy. "You can't run away. The only way out of this is to fight me." Samuel stops infront of Jake, faces close as he tries to intimidate him. Why do guys even do that? They look like they're going to kiss...
"I just love fighting so much. So, be honest with me..." Samuel's eyes move to me with a blank exspression and I smile at him, crossing my arms over my chest. He blinks, looking back at Jake. "It's just you three, right?"
"...Three?" Jake asks, a smile on his lips as someone pulls up on a bike. He was bald and muscular, a second year from Chorong Middle. "Sorry, but make that four."
"Five." I add, glaring at him. Jake looks at me confused and Samuel looks at me blankly. Someone behind him speaks up.
"I don't punch girls."
"Me neither."
