"YOU'RE going to do great tonight, Y/N."

You looked over at your best friend sat beside you, giving her a smile as she tried to build up the confidence that you didn't have. Tonight was the first night you've been out of your house since you and Harry broke up, and Gwen insisted that you come out and perform the song you'd been working on.

You weren't much of a singer, truthfully. You've never had any luck with any of the auditions that you've done — but Jerry grew up with your father and gives you whatever nights you want to perform. You had a dazed look on your face when Gwen gasping caught your attention.

Your gaze followed hers, your lips parting slightly as you watched Harry stroll into the pub with a petite, tall blonde on his arm. You swallowed the lump in your throat, turning to look at Gwen before you chuckled lightly. "What an ass." Gwen commented, wondering how he had the balls to bring his new girl out. "Don't let him ruin your night. Go up there and show him what he's missing."

You watched as Jerry made his way to the stage, the spotlight shining directly on him before you turned to see Harry, your eyes locking as he helped the girl into her chair. You turned away quickly, letting out a deep breath as you fought back the tears. "And next to the stage is... Y/N!"

Applause was heard all around, Gwen giving you a comforting hug before you made your way up the short steps, taking a seat on the stool. You tried not to look in his direction as you adjusted the microphone, letting out a deep breath as you faced the full room. "This is something I wrote over the past few weeks.. it—" Your eyes locked with his, the words ceasing to leave your lips. "This is called happier."

Harry never took his eyes off of you, and when the music started, you noticed him shift forward in his seat and rest his elbows on the table. "We broke up a month ago... your friends aren't mine, you know, I know. You've moved on, found someone new.."

Your eyes scanned the room and found Gwen, the biggest smile on her face as she encouraged you to continue, "One more girl who brings out the better in you. And I thought my heart was attached. For all the sunlight of our past."

Harry couldn't seem to focus on anyone else around him, his eyes never leaving yours as you continued. He'd never realized your voice was as beautiful as it is, nor how much prettier you've gotten over the past month. "Oh, I hope you're happy, but not like how you were with me. I'm selfish, I know, I can't let you go. So find someone great but don't find no one better. I hope you're happy, but don't be happier."

Harry's eyes connected with yours, the both of you refusing to break contact. "And do you tell her she's the most beautiful girl you've ever seen? An eternal love bullshit you know you'll never mean. Remember when I believed you meant it when you said it first to me?"

All of Harry's emotions had come flooding in at once, "And now I'm pickin' her apart. Like cuttin' her down make you miss my wretched heart. But she's beautiful, she looks kind, she probably gives you butterflies." Harry had shrugged off his girlfriend a few times by this point, his main focus being on you as you sang your feelings, the lyrics tugging at his heart strings as he thought about how he'd made you feel this way.

"I hope you're happy, I wish you all the best, really. Say you love her, baby, just not like you loved me. And think of me fondly when your hands are on her. I hope you're happy, but don't be happier." Your eyes had fluttered closed, refusing to stare at him any longer as your song came to an end, the amount of applause you received from around the room making you feel like your dinner from earlier could come up your throat.

You gave a quick smile before you exited the stage, brushing past Gwen as you nudged your way into the bathroom, slamming the door closed behind you. Singing this song wasn't supposed to make you feel this way, and it probably wouldn't have if you hadn't seen Harry just a few feet away with the woman you envied. What could she give him that you couldn't?

You stared at yourself in the mirror, brushing away the few tears that had slipped from your eyes. Gwen was groaning as she rushed into the bathroom, immediately wrapping her arms around you and resting her chin on your shoulder. "Are you okay?"

You eyed her through the mirror, the mascara that was supposed to be waterproof streaking your cheeks. "I'll be fine." You inhaled a breath, grabbing a wet paper towel to wipe at your face. "If he hadn't shown up with her.."

"She's not even pretty." Gwen scoffed, leaning her back against the sink, rubbing your shoulder. "Do you wanna go?" You only nodded, tossing the towel into the bin and exiting behind her.

Harry was nowhere to be seen, but that's when you heard his voice. "Y/N." You stopped, Gwen reaching down to grab ahold of your hand, your body turning as you looked at your ex boyfriend. The tears had threatened to come out again as you stared at him, seeing he looked as good as ever — if not better.

"Harry." You forced a smile at him, Gwen giving your hand a squeeze as she released your breathing has slowed.

"You sounded wonderful... and that song.. it's beautiful." His hand reached out to touch your shoulder, your body twisting to avoid any touch he wanted to offer. He dropped his hand with a frown at your reaction, tucking it into his jeans.

"Thank you." Was all you could say, wanting nothing more than to make your way out of here and never have to speak to him, or see his face ever again. "I have to go." You gave him a forced smile before you turned away, pulling Gwen with you on your way out.

You looked back at him before you left, seeing him standing there with a frown prominent on his face, his eyes glossy as he watched you disappear in front of him. He was regretting everything he's ever done the past month, from leaving you to showing up here tonight. But the thing is, he didn't realize that you'd be here. His girlfriend has been begging him to take her out and the one night he does, he runs into you.

That's the thing about breaking up in a small town, I guess.
