Before there was magic, worlds, or Wizards, the essence of the Spiral was only contained of Shadow. Shadow magic was unstable and could not be contained in such large quantities. The first beings, Grandmother Raven, Merle Ambrose and Bartleby, saw the destruction in harnessing Shadow magic and dispelled most of its existence into a world known as Khrysalis. With this, the new worlds began to be formed by three magical beings: the Tritons, the Dragons and the Giants.
