The egg in the middle (Benedict) was attempting to bypass an invisible barrier/force that protected the lighthouse - where Benedict needed to get to - where only those pure of heart could enter. Benedict, being the antagonist in Sunset Paradise and having blown up the residence of the protagonists (Meggy and Auri), he could not have passed through.

After attempting multiple times with his hired 'minions' and failing, he decided the best course of action was to return to the town (Port Aurora) and, as the sheriff, act kind towards majority of the citizens. After keeping up his facade for a suitable amount of time for the children of the town to trust him, he 'abducted' them and returned to the lighthouse.

From there, he used the children as a method of entering and bypassing the lighthouse's barrier through forcing the children into the barrier as his form of defense. He succeeded in this, having successfully cheated his way through the forcefield.
