namjoon falls for his straight best friend.

or,

namjoon discovers his best friend, whom he's confidentially in love with, has a boyfriend. and has had one for months. secretly.

--

Namjoon, one hand on the back of his head and the other in his pocket, attached his back to the wall immediately after recognising what type of scene was unfolding. He made no move to rearrange his arms, and his leg even bent upward, attaching his foot to the wall.

The soft voices had a slight echo in the empty school halls. He couldn't hear the prom music in this part of the building and the empty halls gave an eerie and foreign impression.

"Thank you for asking me to prom, Guk." Taehyung's voice carried itself farther than it would've were the halls full of other students.

"Tae . . ." Jeongguk inhaled sharply. "I'm really sorry for wanting to keep this— us a secret. I know it's hard for you—"

   "Guk, you—"

"I'm your boyfriend and you were unsure if I was even going to ask you for prom, hyung."

Boyfriend. Namjoon bounces the word around in his mind for a few moments.

"Guk, listen to me. You know that I'm willing to wait, right?"

A silence followed; Jeongguk never was the verbal type, but Namjoon knows him well enough to understand the silence doesn't mean a lack of answer, but a physical one. A nod, most likely.

"And I know you're not ready yet. To get out of the closet, touch and hold me freely, display acts of love in public or to officially confirm something as big as your sexuality, especially when your family gives you mixed signals about this type of relationship. I'm willing to wait as long as you need."

A moment of silence passed before any speech was heard. "Thank you, Taehyung."

Taehyung's giggle made Namjoon smile bitterly from where he's perched against the wall. "Now let's ditch this place and get some food. My sweet tooth doesn't want to indulge in its usual endeavours."

Namjoon didn't pay attention to the rest of their conversation after determining which way their footsteps were headed. The hand on the back of his head drops into the pocket of his dress pants, mimicking the other one. The new information shocks Namjoon; he hadn't seen it coming.

Taehyung and Jeongguk are dating. Have been dating. For a while now.

He supposes he's glad for his friend; he'd always been complaining about wanting a partner—not the figure, but the emotional and physical deeds that usually ensue.

But why hadn't Jeongguk told him about their relationship? He would've stopped pushing Jeongguk to go on blind dates with other girls if he'd told him, and he even could've helped with some of the issues that must surely have arisen between them after taking some time to heal himself.

It's not like Namjoon ever refuses to see things in a different light if he's unable to understand. But he supposes sexuality, a delicate subject, can bring occasion for even the slightest of doubts to cloud any reassurance.

Then again, Jeongguk's family had been giving mixed signals about the whole homosexual thing, and people who have a significant place in someone's life—family or not, as long as their place is significant—can influence the way they think others would approach or react to things.

And it's not like Namjoon's out to anyone that goes to their high school, either—well, Jeongguk excluded. But it's not like he's exactly close to anyone else, though.

"What are you thinking?" Yoongi's voice startled Namjoon, but the only indication of that was the sharp rise of his shoulders. That, too, was quickly laxed after seeing who the speaker was. Yoongi had a knack for startling people; it's a wonder how Namjoon's desensitised to it, as he's not one to desensitise to things so easily.

   "Nothing," was his reply.

Yoongi didn't look convinced, but said nothing of it. "You up for a smoke somewhere isolated? I've been around enough people for the day."

Namjoon didn't say anything, but the direction he's heading in is a 'yes' to Yoongi's offer. Namjoon's never really been a verbal person either; perhaps that's why he gets along so well with Jeongguk, and perhaps that's why he's always misinterpreted Jeongguk's actions, too. There's not much to reinforce the 'just friends' ideology between two people who are either stuck in books or their minds when together.

Jeongguk's constant presence was like an anchor of sorts; he never realised how much he needed that anchor, how dependent he was upon that anchor, until it began to disappear.

Maybe the first time he saw Jeongguk in a different light had been because of the rosy cheeks and pretty nose with white snow in the background, but the aftermath of it—the falling for him, someone who didn't (couldn't) feel the same—could've been prevented by ignoring it ever happened and restricting the imagination.

Maybe then he wouldn't have felt so stupid for being in love with someone who had eyes on another since the day he dared to call it 'love'.
