Chapter 20

As they approached the planet, Joker picked up a signal that was likely the Salarian unit, while he picked up several defense towers that would keep the Normandy from getting to them.

"Joker will drop us in the Mako, so we can take out the defense towers. We'll then rendezvous with the Normandy at the Salarian's location," she prepped him and Garrus as they approached the drop point.

Once they were ground side, the Mako was able to roll through the Geth in the way until they found the controls for the AA towers and he and Garrus were able to hack them and bring them down.

They arrived at the Salarian team's location and hopped out of the Mako. Shepard made a bee-line for where Ashley was arguing with one of the Salarians.

"So, what the hell are we supposed to do exactly?" she was asking him.

"Stay put until we figure out a plan," he replied.

"Commander Aubrey Shepard," she said as she walked up, "what's the situation?"

"Captain Kirrahe, STG. You've just landed in the middle of a hot zone, Commander. We need to stay put until the Council sends the reinforcements we requested."

She glanced between him and Ashley, "We are your reinforcements, Captain."

"What?! You're all they sent?" he said. "We asked for a fleet!"

"You'll find we're a pretty scrappy bunch," Ashley said.

"This is Saren's base of operations. He's breeding an army of Krogan. I don't care how scrappy you and your people are, it's not going to be enough."

"Breeding Krogan?" Wrex cut in from where he had overheard their conversation. "How is that possible?"

"Apparently, Saren has found a cure for the genophage," Captain Kirrahe said.

"Having the Geth is bad enough, but if he has an army of Krogan too..." Shepard couldn't finish the thought.

"My thoughts exactly," the Captain replied, "Which is why we must see that this facility and its secrets are destroyed."

"I don't think so!" Wrex interjected, "This cure could save my people."

"And allow the Krogan to overrun the galaxy! We can't afford to make the same mistake twice," Kirrahe maintained.

Wrex approached him menacingly, "We are not a mistake!" he growled, before storming off.

"Let me talk to him," Shepard said, leaving him and Ashley with the Salarian Captain, who in short order left them to coordinate a plan with his team.

He watched as she approached Wrex and moved a little closer, just in case trouble started. Pissed off Krogans were unpredictable and despite all the times Wrex had had their backs, Kaidan wasn't sure if he'd stick with them over the fate of his species. 

"This is bullshit, Shepard!" Wrex said, "If there's a cure for my people we can't destroy it!"

"Wrex, these aren't your people. They're tools being bred and indoctrinated by Saren. He's the enemy here."

"Really? Because he's the one who made a cure and you want to destroy it. The lines between friend and foe are getting a little blurry in my opinion."

"If we let him use it your people won't be around long enough to benefit 'cause the Reapers are gonna wipe us all out!"

"Because some fifty-thousand-year-old nightmare told you that's what's going to happen? You don't know that for sure! This is the fate of my people we're talking about, Shepard, it's a chance we should take!" he said, drawing his weapon on her.
