xxx. THE GEMINI COVEN'S BEEN CONSIDERED one of (if not the) most powerful coven of witches in the Pacific Northwestern United States, located primarily in Oregon. The coven has been around for thousands of years, notorious for their prison world creations as well as the merge spell which only their coven performs.
The Merge spell is a powerful ritual and tradition in the Gemini coven to determine the next leader of the coven. It involves two Gemini twins (the children of the leader) who, after their 22nd birthday, have to go through the merge spell. The twins consciousness and strength is merged together and the stronger twin would survive the spell and be the leader of the coven (holding both their magic as well as their twin's) while the other one dies.
Joshua Parker, the leader of the Gemini coven after winning the merge against his own twin brother, ended up having a larger family of nine children with his wife; Josette (Jo), Malachai (Kai), Rosalind (Rose), Joseph (Joey), Everett (Ev), Theodore (Theo), Olivia (Liv), Lucas (Luke), and Emilia.
Joshua and his wife Deborah had two sets of twins, Jo and Kai being the oldest, following Liv and Luke a while after.
Emilia, the youngest of the Parker family, had been the only accidental child. Joshua and Deborah had been trying to have another set of twins after the first set, to prevent Kai from becoming the coven's leader. Kai dealt with a lot of trauma at a young age due to his inability to possess his own magic and ability to steal, or "siphon", other's magic and was viewed as mentally unstable (after being ostracized from his coven and family).
Emilia had been the only Parker sibling who Kai seemed to care about, the only reason he couldn't be diagnosed as a true sociopath.
Emilia had an instant strained relationship with her father, Joshua, as her mother died giving birth to her. It led to the other Parker siblings, including Kai himself, mainly helping to take care of her. It wasn't until she was a year old that they realized that Emilia was also a siphon witch like Kai, and one of the reasons why Deborah died giving birth to her was that Emilia had unknowingly been siphoning magic from her mother and it lead to the weakening of her body.
Their strained relationships with Joshua along with being seen as an "abomination" for being a siphon witch not able to create her own magic is what created a bond that Kai hadn't had with anyone else before, especially not someone from his family/coven, not even his twin sister.
Jo had seen the change in her twin brother Kai after Emilia was born, how he seemed to at least care about someone. She had hope that this meant Kai could become good. However, all that changed when Kai found out that his parents purposefully tried to have another set of twins because they didn't want him to become the leader of the coven, which they assumed he would win the merge due to his siphon ability giving him an advantage for once.
Kai snapped, killing four of his younger siblings, stabbing Jo with a hunting knife, and attempting (and failing) to hunt down Liv and Lucas to murder them. However, Kai (seeing Emilia as someone who could possibly continue the legacy) left his youngest sister (only a few years old) alone.
Kai was eventually locked in a prison world by the Gemini coven as a punishment for what he had done. Jo ended up leaving her family, changing her last name to start a new life without magic. Liv, Luke, and Emilia were left behind to be raised within the coven, the twins being groomed for the merge they would eventually have to perform when they got older.
Emilia's relationship with Joshua changed after that. After the loss of his children and seeing how Kai turned out, he started to gain a better relationship with his daughter who seemed to be a spinning image of her mother. While it didn't fix how she had been treated in the past, he did his best to mend that relationship.
Emilia eventually made it into Whitmore College in McKinley, Virginia where the twins had already been going. They knew that their father and coven wanted them in Virginia anyways to stop the Travelers and, specifically, Markos. They hadn't expected, however, to be dragged into the drama that the Mystic Falls gang consistently had surrounding them, eventually including their eldest brother's escape from a prison world...
