Angel couldn't escape the mansion any faster as she made her way back down to the village, a basket filled with sandwiches, wine, and chopped apples in her arm. She tried her best to push away the memories of that morning as the village came into view and she weaved between the busy villagers bustling in the street.
She glanced down at her feet for only a moment when she felt her body slam into something solid. Feeling embarrassed about running into someone, Angel opened her mouth to apologize but paused when she found a familiar pair of blue eyes staring back at her.
"James," Angel breathed in relief as she straightened up and quietly swung the basket to hold it behind her.
"Miss that much already?" James teased the small brunette with a small smile that made her heart skip a beat. "I was unsure after you left so quickly the other day."
"Oh," Angel replied with a blush as she recalled running out after their encounter the other day. "I had to get home before my father found out I was gone. I apologize if I've offended you."
"You could never offend me, my lady," James smirked as Angel felt her cheeks burn under his gaze. "What are you doing down here on this fine day?"
"Oh, well," Angel stumbled over her words as she felt her practiced conversation escape her head. "I know you said you were leaving, I just thought perhaps if you had stayed..."
"Luckily for me, I had a change of plans," James replied as Angel trailed off, unsure how to finish. "Besides, how could I leave such a beautiful lady behind?"
Angel wasn't sure how to respond to his words as she felt her mouth open and close, unable to comprehend any words.
"What's that you got there?" James' question prompted Angel out of her flabbergasted state as she realized he was staring at the basket she was holding with both hands behind her back.
"Well, I..." Angel stumbled over her words as she pulled the basket out in front of her sheepishly. "You told me your mother always cut you apples as a kid so I thought I'd do the same."
"Funny, I don't remember telling you that," James raised an eyebrow at the brunette who released a small laugh.
"You were drunk beyond belief when you told me," Angel replied as the two laughed together.
"Perhaps a picnic then?" He asked the petite girl who nodded her head eagerly and allowed him to lead her to the forest.
The two walked for a while, discussing their different lives. Despite having to lie about many things about her life, including her father being the oldest being in existence and her family consisting completely of vampires, Angel felt completely at ease with James. She felt herself growing more comfortable in his presence, able to share things about herself that before she had only ever told Klaus.
"Are we almost there?" Angel questioned as she reached out to grab James' hand, allowing him to help her over a log.
James' grinned at her question, removing his hand from Angel's grasp as he reached forward and pulled back several tree branches, and gestured for Angel to continue ahead.
Taking a few steps, Angel brushed past James only to stop in her tracks at the sight before her.
A small waterfall bubbled over several rocks, flowing into a small pond that sparkled underneath the Sun's glow. The clear water allowed Angel to catch a glimpse of the small fish of every color of the rainbow swimming beneath the surface. Angel's eyes widened as one even jumped out from beneath, flashing its dazzling blue fins before splashing back into its habitat.
Beneath the pond lay a small clearing of lush grass, perfect for a picnic. Tress and vines surrounded the enclosure, completely cutting off the space from everything else. The secluded space seemed closed off to the rest of the world, almost as if it was its own universe on its own.
It was cheesy, but Angel swore she could even hear the birds singing
"It's beautiful," Angel finally breathed out, her eyes still wide with wonder as she took in the beautiful sight.
She turned to face James, a large grin on her face, only to find him already staring at her. Angel felt her cheeks flush as she resisted the urge to turn away from his gaze. Angel allowed him to lead her to the clearing, where they were able to relax as Angel pulled out the food she packed.
It wasn't long until the pair were finished eating and sitting side by side on the field of grass, staring at the beautiful forest around them. Angel released a small laugh at something James said, finding herself wanting to stay in the clearing forever and never lose the happiness she was feeling at that very moment.
She was pulled out of her thoughts when she felt the familiar warmth of James' hand on her back, followed by several kisses trailing up to her neck.
"James," Angel groaned playfully as she pushed him away. "We're in the middle of the forest."
"So?" James questioned, releasing a small laugh at Angel's narrowed eyes. "I would do it in the middle of the village in front of everyone if I could."
"I'm not some random whore you picked up in a tavern," Angel rolled her eyes at his words, however, a small smile graced her lips as he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in closer.
"Never said you were, darling," His words, while sweet, caused Angel to tense up beside him as her mind flashed to a certain mischievous vampire.
"What's wrong?" James pulled back, concern lacing his voice as he felt he did something to upset her.
"Nothing," Angel shook her head, banishing the thoughts from her head as she turned her head to face James with a forced smile. "Just don't like that nickname."
"Well good thing I have plenty of others," James grinned as he pressed another kiss to her neck, "... princess," another kiss, "my angel," another one, "my love..."
Angel giggled as reached up, grabbing his chin and pulling him away from her neck. Before James could say anything, she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. James hungrily returned the gesture, pulling Angel onto his lap as her hands became entangled in his curls.
And slowly, Angel felt herself slowly falling in love for the first time.
