Magic is tough to master, and mind-melding is one of the more difficult things Hogwarts students can learn. Basically, students have to try to learn to read and get in their heads.
Voldemort was actually excellent at this and he was able to manipulate Harry Potter. Potter wound up having to do some training sessions with Professor Snape to shield his mind.
As it turns out, even Slytherins who can't read your mind can prevent you from entering theirs at will. Something about being that house and its mystery, or the cunning they already show, seems to make them great this.
