The next morning all three doctors went to work. They met in their common room and greeted each other.

"Did the girl from yesterday wake up?", asked Ignazio.

"I have talked to Angela (the nurse from the reception) and she said she didn't, but she's stable", said Piero, "I have to do my ward round. Does any of you have time to see her now?"

"I think I can", said Gianluca and looked at his schedule, "Yeah, I've got a few minutes free now."

He left the room and went to the second floor. He knocked at the door but didn't get an answer. He opened it quitely and went inside. The girl was still sleeping. He looked at the monitor and then opened the document that was lying next to the bed. The nurses have taken care of her and the temperature had sunk.

Gianluca went nearer and placed the back of his hand on her forehead. Then his pager beeped and he went out of the room.

It was a busy morning for the doctors, but eventually it got better, so they could meet at lunch.

"Did you see the girl?", asked Piero, while biting into a big sandwich.

Gianluca nodded and took a sip of his juice: "She's alright. I think she'll wake up soon."

"Do we have any calls or notes about a person that's missing?", asked Ignazio and put some berries into his mouth.

The others shook their heads. They continued eating and talking about some stuff, when the receptionist came in.

"Dr. Barone, the patient from room 394 is waking up", she said.

"Thank you, Angela", he said and all three stood up.

"Alright, let's go and check on our mermaid", said Gianluca.

* the girl's perspective *

I heard a steady beeping. I groaned and turned my head to the other side. My eyes felt heavy and my body ached.

Then I heard a knock. I turned my head towards the sound and slowly opened my eyes, squinting from the light. My vision was a little bit blurred, but I saw three figures in white coats entering the room. Only now I understood the beeping. I must be at the hospital.

I concentrated on the figures. They stood around me. The one who was the closest was wearing glasses. He said to me with a clear voice:

"How are you feeling, Miss?"

I frowned. I opened my mouth, but closed it again.

"Take your time", said the one behind him. He had a deep and soft voice.

I swallowed and whispered: "Okay."

Then the third, who was standing on the other side, said:

"Are you feeling pain somewhere?"

My eyes still didn't focus quite well but I distinguished that he had a mustache and a slight beard.

I nodded slowly.

Before anyone could say something, the door opened again and a voice said:

"Dr. Boschetto, we need you at the office. There is some uncertainty with the results of your patient."

The one with the mustache nodded and left. I turned my head to the other ones.

"Where is it hurting? Can you tell or show us?", said the one with the glasses.

I closed my eyes. My wrist was pulsating and my head was hurting. I opened my eyes again.

"Head. Hand", I said heavily. I didn't understand why, but talking was very exhausting to me.

"Okay, you will get an infusion to reduce the pain. Now, Miss, we don't want to stress you. You need to rest. We will come to you again in a while when you will be stronger", said the one with the glasses.

I blinked with my eyes in approval. He turned to the other doctor, said something and left. The last one placed a remote control into my hand and said:

"This is a button; if you need anything, just press it and someone will come. Dr. Barone is calling a nurse. They will give you a painkiller. Don't worry, everything is going to be alright."

Even with my blurred vision I saw him smiling and my lips winced as I tried to smile back, which wasn't very successfull. But he must have recognised my effort and patted my shoulder. Then he left, too.

A nurse came in and after she gave me the infusion I quickly fell asleep.

* narrator's perspective *

Gianluca met Piero outside the room.

"What do you think?", he asked his colleague.

"For the damages that we have detected she is feeling a little bit too bad, I guess. She can barely talk", Piero answered concerened.

"I thought so too... Let's see her in the evening again. Maybe she will be feeling better. If not, I'd do an MRT."

Piero agreed and the doctors went on with their work.
