She loved the way sunshine felt on the nape of her bare neck and the way the waves lapped softly at her feet

THE SUN made her heart sing and ache at the same time

THE SUN made her heart sing and ache at the same time.

Belli Cordova could just make out a blurry beach from where she was hanging out of the car window. The wind whistled its familiar melody in her ear, blowing her hair every which way and claiming her yellow bandana as its treasure. She closed her eyes but she could still see the waves imprinted on the back of her eyelids.

The waves were June's most majestic creation and June was Belli's most adored sweetheart. June and her saltwater-drenched skin and sun-bleached hair, making everybody a little blonder, a little more golden than any other month. In June the water was always colder, wrapping her bones in a welcome embrace, never truly letting go. What did it matter that Belli was knee-deep in seafoam every other month too, the ocean in June always tickled her toes, greeting her like an old lover that never erased their feelings.

"Bury me in the sea!" She wanted to scream. Instead, she laughed, and the note swam clear, melodic, beautiful. It was the same note the wind whistled, the waves crashed, and the careless spirit of the water sang beneath the tide.
