"T-thank you," Evalynn stammered, still flipping the letter in her hands.
"You're welcome," Connor replied.
They stared into each other's eyes for a moment, and Evalynn noticed that Connor's eyes got a lighter tint to them when the light hit them than the dark not-quite-black color they appeared to be yesterday. She thought about the Color Key she had snuck into her bag the night before and wondered if he would even want to look through it with her.
"Well, um, that's all I wanted to talk to you about, so..."
Evalynn watched as her Soulmate turned, starting to leave.
"D-do you, um..."
Connor turned back, looking at her expectantly.
"W-well, I, um, have the C-Color Key with me i-if you w-wanted to..."
Connor smirked, nodding his head to the door.
"Sure, Hansen. Just not here, okay?"
Evalynn nodded in understanding, following him back out of the library. It wasn't until he started leading her to the front doors of the school that she realized they were ditching. The lunch period would be over any second and they needed to be in class. Of course, her Soulmate wasn't one to stick around for classes anyway, so it shouldn't have surprised her much.
Connor led her to an SUV in a bold color that she would soon know the name of. Climbing inside, she couldn't help but think how fitting the car was for its owner. The interior of the vehicle was littered with trash and cigarette butts. Connor drove until they got to Ellison State Park. Evalynn followed her Soulmate into the depths of the park.
He ended up sitting at the base of a tree not far from the oak she had climbed two weeks earlier. Hesitantly, she sat next to him, pulling her bag closer to herself. Unzipping one of the pockets, she pulled out the little booklet that was the Color Key. Tentatively, Evalynn scooted a little closer to the boy beside her, holding the booklet between them so they could both see.
The first three colors were the ones everybody knew: black, white, and grey. After that, however, the book went through all the different shades from red to purple and everything in between. There was even a special section at the back after all the basic colors and variations where different eye colors and what they looked like were pictured.
It didn't take long for them both to be smiling and laughing as they pointed out their favorites to each other and made connections between the colors on the pages to the objects around them. Connor's car, they discovered, was red. The grass upon which they sat was green. The leaves on the trees around them were varying shades of orange, yellow, red, brown and a few that were green.
"Blue," Connor decided.
"What?"
"My favorite. Not the pure blue. Like your eyes."
"M-my.."
Evalynn looked up at him. Somehow, she had ended up leaning against his chest and the Color Key was in his hands in front of them.
"You have flecks of green and gold in the blue. It's pretty."
Evalynn blushed a lovely shade of pink.
"I prefer yours..." she muttered.
Connor smirked down at her.
"Oh, really?"
"Y-yeah. They're this deep shade of chocolate until the light hits them and they turn this lovely shade of honey-brown. They're so complex. I could stare at them for hours."
"Hours, huh? Surely they're not that exciting."
"N-no. Not exciting. Beautiful."
Evalynn's blush deepened to a rosy-red as she spoke and Connor smiled. Yeah, he could handle this... right?
