Hey guys! It's chapter one! This is mostly just some prologue stuff, enjoy. Right now Jack and Race are 9. Also, a little disclaimer, I didn't put much of the newsie accent/grammar, so if you need that sorry I was too lazy.

Jack Kelly was selling his last newspapers for the day when he heard someone cry, "Help me, please! Someone help!" He immediately dropped his papers and ran towards the alleyway where he heard the sound coming from. There he found what appeared to be a badly beaten up little girl in the arms of his best friend Race.

"What happened?" Jack asked, looking closer at the little girl. She looked like she was unconscious. She had dirty blonde hair that fell just past her shoulders. She looked much too thin for someone her size but was not dressed like someone who lived on the streets. Jack was drawn out of thought by what Race said next.

"Jack, we've got to help her. I saw her father get shot and she ran so she wouldn't be shot, too, but I lost track of her and now I found her but she's unconscious." Race looked uncharacteristically upset.

"I'll help you. We can bring her to the lodging house." Jack picked up the unconscious girl from Race, and they started the walk to the lodging house. The boys didn't talk much and they soon entered the newsies' home.

"What's this? What happened Jack?" Asked a man at the small desk in what looked like something of a lobby.

"Hey, Kloppman. Race saw this girl's father get shot. He lost track of her while she was running away, and when he found her again she was lying on the ground beaten and unconscious."

"Alright, bring her to the girls' room and we'll see what we can do." Jack laid the little girl down on one of the few bunks in the girls' bunk room and waited to be told what to do. "You two leave for now, but tell Liza to come here." Soon the older female newsie came into the room. When she saw the girl she gasped but went to help Mr. Kloppman clean her up without any questions. When Jack and Race came back the little girl was out of her previously torn dress and was instead wearing an old outfit of one of the younger newsies. It was way too big on her and Jack would have laughed if not for the serious situation. She also looked considerably cleaner.

"Will she be ok?" Race asked, looking concerned.

"Nothing is broken," Mr. Kloppman said, "but she is badly bruised. However, that will heal in no time. Meanwhile, she should hopefully wake up soon." There was nothing left to say, so Race just nodded. Later that afternoon an older boy walked into the girls' bunk room to see Liza but stopped when he saw the new girl laying on a bunk with Race, Jack, and Mr. Kloppman all waiting close by her.

"What happened Liza?" The boy asked.

"Everything will be fine, Poker, we're just waiting for this girl to wake up," Mr. Kloppman answered for Liza. As if on cue, the little girl slowly groaned and rubbed her eyes. She turned onto her side and opened her eyes to see five unfamiliar faces all watching her closely.

"What h-happened?" the girl asked cautiously.

ok but if this was me i would totally freak out like girl you just woke up in a strange bed surrounded by 5 strangers

"Ummm well, we were sort of hoping you could tell us. What's the last thing you remember?" Race asked. Jack said nothing as he stared at the girl. He could now see that her eyes were a striking blue-grey color and scanned the room sharply.

"Uhh well I-I was running from something. And th-these boys started h-hitting me and-and it hurt a lot. But I don't remember anything aft- wait. FATHER!" The young girl's face turned white, and she soon burst into tears.

"Shhh, it's going to be ok. Everything will be fine." Race tried to console her. The other girl newsies started coming into the bunk room, but they all left quickly after a harsh glare from Poker, who seemed to be the leader. Race quickly filled the girl in on everything he saw and asked to hear what she was comfortable with sharing. She had calmed down by now, took a shaky breath, and proceeded to tell the others about herself.

"My name is Alyssa. I am 7 years old, and my mother should still be alive. I was trying to get some food with my father today. Then these cops surrounded him. They-they shot him and I ran. The next thing I remember is waking up here. We had an apartment and I remember where it is. Thank you for your help but I need to see if my mother's ok."

"Wait!" Mr. Kloppman said as Alyssa tried to get up. "Race will walk you back - you're not strong enough to walk yet. And please, if you need anything don't be scared to come back here. If you need a job now that your father is dead, Poker and I will let you be a newsie. If anything ever happens, you're always welcome to come and stay here."

"Thank you, Mr. Kloppman," Alyssa said. And with that Race scooped Alyssa up to take her home and meet her fate.

"Mother?" Alyssa timidly called out, opening the door to their small apartment. "Alyssa, is that you?"

"MAMA!" Alyssa jumped out of Race's arms and ran to her mother, immediately collapsing from how much it hurt.

"Oh thank the Lord you're ok!" Her mother cried, embracing Alyssa tightly. Race said goodbye awkwardly and quickly left.

"Mama..." Alyssa said as they pulled apart, "I've been told I could be a newsie if we need the money."

"Alyssa, I don't know how I feel about this, but we need the money. With your father gone-" her mother broke off crying. "With your father gone, we're going to need you working. I'll try to get a job too, but we'll need all the money we can get. Now get to bed. You have a busy day tomorrow." Alyssa stood up and shakily walked to the other side of the small room where her bed was. "Goodnight, Alyssa. Are you sure you're ok?" Her mother asked.

"I'll be fine, Mama. It's nothing I can't handle," Alyssa replied.

"If you say so."

In the morning Alyssa's mother helped her into some old boy clothes that fit her better than the newsie's clothes. i don't know where she got them don't ask Her mother also helped Alyssa pull her hair up into the old newsie hat Mr. Kloppman had given her. "There, now you look as much like a boy as you ever will," Her mother said, tucking the last strand of hair into Alyssa's hat.

"Thanks, Mama," Alyssa said. "Goodbye, I love you."

"I love you, too."

As Alyssa reached the distribution center, she was met by Jack and Poker. "Good to see you again. Are you gonna be a newsie?" Jack asked.

"Yes. Mother's ok, but we really need the money with father dead," Alyssa replied, pushing through mentioning her father.

"Are you feeling any better today?" Jack asked.

"Yes. It hurts to walk but it's nothing I can't handle," Alyssa said, repeating what she told her mother the night before. "Thank you for helping me yesterday, I'm sorry I didn't thank you sooner."

"Don't worry about it," Jack said with a big grin.

"Well, you look a lot better than before," Poker said. "You come and sell with me and Jack today, and we can show you the ropes."

The three made their way in line to buy their newspapers. "Hey Poker, who's the new kid?" A newsie asked as the others all crowded around Alyssa. Poker seemed lost for a second, so Jack cut in saying, "This here's Alyssa. She's gonna be a newsie. But while she's working she's a boy and her name's Cap."

"What Jack said. Now everyone, get to work," Poker said. The newsies all lined up again and bought their newspapers, then with a few curious glances at Alyssa they went off to work.

After that Alyssa got into a rhythm. Race or Jack or both would come to pick her up in the mornings. They would then go to the distribution center and buy their newspapers and sell them together and sometimes with Poker. Race, however, sold at the races every day. After selling, Alyssa went back to the lodging house to hang out with the other newsies. Before it got too late Jack or Race would walk with Alyssa back to her apartment. Jack and Race would head back home and everyone would sleep and do it all again.

So that's chapter one! I hope you liked it. Let me know what you thought.
