It turned out that Trelawny had a few screws loose - not that I didn't already know, but after she spazzed out during Harry's individual exam, spoke about the Dark Lord like she was possessed and started yapping about a servant returning after twelve years, it's fair that I'm freaked out
While I was out, the other four had decided to sneak Harry's cloak from the secret tunnel he'd been using to get to Hogsmeade so we could visit Hagrid.
After going to dinner with the rest of the school, we didn't go to Gryffindor Tower afterward. Though it wasn't planned, I had to take a quick detour and comfort a grieving Cedric, who had heard of the lost appeal and was worried about how I'd taken it.
                              Bless.
All through dinner (and when I'd linked his arm to enter the Hall), Harry had kept his arms folded over his robes to hide the lump of his Invisibility Cloak.
We skulked in an empty chamber off the entrance hall, listening until we were sure that each teacher and student had left the Hall and surrounding area.
We heard, an hour after Ron's last piece of pie, the last pair of hurried footsteps and a slammed hall door. Hermione poked her head around the corner.
"Okay," she whispered with a smidge of absolute certainty. "I don't think anyone else is here - right - cloak on - "
Harry unraveled the silvery fleece from under his cloaks and ushered us into a huddle before casting it over our shoulders. It felt like a hundred tiny spiders were delicately running their puny legs over the back of my neck, shoulders and back.
Walking together so that we wouldn't be too noticeable, the five of us crossed the hall on tiptoe beneath the cloak, then walked down the stone front steps and out onto the dewey grass. The sun had already sunk behind the Forbidden Forest, gilding the top branches of the trees.
After a careful trek, we reached Hagrid's cabin and knocked carefully.
Hagrid, bless his soul, was a minute in answering, and when he finally came to the door, he looked around with a pale face and slight tremble.
"It's us," Harry hissed. "We're wearing the Invisibility Cloak. Let us in and we can take it off."
"Yeh shouldn've come!" Hagrid whispered anxiously and stood back to let us step in. He shut the door quickly and Harry pulled off the cloak.
"Finally!" I heard (b/f/n) whine, ruffling her hair back into place. "It's so hot under that thing!"
I got a proper look at Hagrid and he seemed - weird, not crying like he would or throwing himself upon our necks. He looked like he didn't know where he was or what he was supposed to do.
His helplessness was worse to watch than his tears, and it broke my heart.
"Wan' some tea?" he said testily, though we all knew perfectly well that he didn't mean to be rude. His hands were shaking as he reached for the kettle.
Hermione gave us a look. "Where's Buckbeak, Hagrid?" she asked hesitantly.
                              I coughed.
We were really, er - going for it. Asking all the hard questions first.
"I-I took him outside," Hagrid said, spilling milk all over the table as he filled up the jug. "He's tethered in me pumpkin patch. Thought he oughta see the trees an' - an' smell the fresh air - before -"
