"Meredith!" Ellis yelled
A 6 year old Meredith ran down the stairs "Coming!" She replied and almost missed the last step
"Can't you watch your steps?" Ellis napped "I got paged, Lara will be here soon to take care of you. In the meantime: don't cause any troubles!" Ellis said sternly
"Kay mommy" Meredith whispered
"Meredith.." Ellis sighed
"Okay mommy" Meredith corrected herself
Ellis left the house and Meredith watched her leave through the window, hoping her mother would turn around and wave before driving away but it didn't happen and to be honest, Meredith wasn't very surprised
Meredith slowly went back to her room and sat down on the bed, clutching her head as she felt stabbing into her skull as tears pooled in her eyes. She just decided to lay down and wait, wait for the day that her mother will care for her
Hours passed and while Lara and Meredith were watching a movie downstairs, Meredith claimed to feel sick
"Hey little one, you're burning up" Lare frowned and decided to cool Meredith down in the bathtub
"Lara, I'm cold" Meredith whined as she sat in the tub while Lara was stroking Meredith's hair
"A little longer, then I'll make you some hot chocolate and then you can go to bed, okay?"
Meredith nodded, being thankful at least Lara was here
Lara helped Meredith out of the tub and changed her into some comfortable pajamas. It didn't take long before Lara could successfully talk Meredith into a deep sleep
Lara waited downstairs until Ellis would come home so she could leave again
...
"Meredith, move your ass, you have school today"
"But mommy-" Meredith whined
"You can't afford to miss any lessons, you're already behind!" Ellis snapped
Meredith rubbed her head and started crying
"What did I tell you about crying girls? No one likes them and they are stupid, they can't be a doctor" Ellis said sternly
Meredith nodded again and stood up. She grabbed her shirt and pulled it over her head but her arms weren't in the right holes
"Come on, are you serious?" Ellis sighed "I don't care, you have to fix it at school, now hurry!" Ellis yelled and went back downstairs as Meredith tried to close her pants but couldn't. Her fingers had difficulty doing it by themselves so she just picked a dark green skirt out of her closet and quickly fixed her shirt even if her mother told her not to
"Meredith, for god's sake, are you almost done?" Ellis yelled from downstairs
"Coming!" Meredith yelled and ran downstairs, almost tumbling again on the stairs
"You're gonna get yourself killed one day" Ellis sighed and Meredith ran to their car, opened the door and buckled herself up with some difficulty as Ellis already started driving instead of waiting until Meredith was ready
...
Halfway through the day, Meredith felt sick again. Her fever was up again and her head was throbbing. She told her teacher and got send to the school nurse who called her mother
Apparently Ellis was in surgery and said that Meredith was fine. It was just the flu and she should wait until the babysitter could come and get her from school
So, Meredith slept almost all afternoon in the nurse office and regularly vomits into the bucket next to her
"Don't worry sweetie, you're okay" The nurse carefully smiled at Meredith
"When will mommy be here?" Meredith whimpered
The nurse frowned "Sweetie, I told you the babysitter would come and you told me about her. Lara, isn't it?"
"Hmm" Meredith nodded and closed her eyes again before she fell back asleep
The next thing Meredith knew was that Lara woke her up
"Hey little one" Lara smiled
"Hi" Meredith whispered but closed her eyes again
"Hey, we're going home. Your mom won't be home today so I'm staying the night" Lara brushed some hairs out of Meredith's face
Meredith groaned and sat upright.
Lara helped her off the bed and started the walk home
"I'm tired" Meredith sobbed
"I'm sorry sweetie, we're almost home" Lara said as she held Meredith's hand
When they finally reached the house, Meredith fell asleep on the first chair she found
"Meredith, do you want some juice?" Lara asked and looked around, seeing an asleep Meredith at the table sitting, her head resting on the table as she was quietly snoring away
Lara scooped up Meredith into her arms and carried her upstairs before trying to gently place her back on the bed
"Mommy?" Meredith whispered
"Shh, go back to bed" Lara whispered and watched Meredith slowly turn around as she grabbed her stuffed animal and squeezed it against her chest
...
"Dr Grey, I really think something is up with your daughter, she-" Lara was talking on the phone as Meredith tip toed downstairs
"No, Dr Grey.. Yes, Dr Grey" Lara sighed. "Bye, Dr Grey" She said before hanging up the phone. Lara turned around and saw Meredith standing at the bottom of the stairs, tears in her eyes
"Is mommy coming home?" She asked vulnerable
"Not yet, sweetie. Let's sit down on the couch for a bit, we can watch a movie" Lara suggested
"Can I go get Bunny?" Meredith asked as she started fidgeting with her hands
"Of course you can, meanwhile I'll grab some DVDs so we can choose" Lara smiled and Meredith nodded her head before running upstairs. Meredith grabbed her favorite blanket and her Bunny and walked downstairs until she fell all the way down, letting go of some loud cries and yells
