Tears streaked down my face as I said a final goodbye to my first friend, Horomatangi. He had lived a long fulfilling life and was now retreating into an eternal sleep beside his island, where his master had been buried. I stroked his smooth, blue scales and thought back to the first time I ever saw him. He had been swimming in the river, before my people had explored the island. I had pointed to him and called him a pretty fish. I smiled sadly.

"Time," my strict mother pulled me away from Horomatangi. With a longing glance I let myself be dragged back. Horomatangi's eyes were filled with longing, but he dove into the beautiful lake and swam dutifully to side of Motutaiko island and settled, ready for his passing. Burying my face in my mother's clothing, I called for my friend.

"Horomatangi"
