It was time for me to give my speech and I was really nervous. I had chosen the topic Human computers because I felt it was something alot of people had never heard of before and needed to know about.
I practiced my speech every spare time I got. My mum was having another argument with my dad and my Aunty Enita but I figured I would deal with that later.
As I walked up to the front of the assembly, holding the necklace my late grandmother gave to me when I was 7 which I believed to be a good luck charm, I silently took a deep breath.
I was about to begin my speech, I scanned the assembly for Kemi hoping he was in school. He stood in the front of the JSS 2 boys' line, smiling at me and giving me a thumbs up.
"Good morning teachers and my fellow scholars". I began. "My name is Tega Iris Ogenevero and I am in JSS 2. My morning speak is based on the topic Human computers".
I began to feel nervous again as I looked at the students and teachers staring at me. I looked over at Kemi who started doing the robot dance, then he mouthed "I'm a human computer"( I'm really good at reading lips). I tried to hold my laughter but ended up snorting. I felt a bit better. I decided to focus my gaze on Kemi and continued speaking. I couldn't help but laugh.
Few minutes later, I averted my gaze to Williams who was staring at Kemi with red cheeks, how was that possible? She looked angry, whatever. I turned my gaze back to Kemi who was now wearing a pair of glasses and rubbing his chin as if he had beards, trying to make sense out of what I was saying. He reminded me of my grandfather when he puts on his lens and tries to read the title of books boldly written in capital letters and my dad says "Papa, the words are in your front and are basically covering the whole page. How are you not seeing it well." Then my grandfather replies "Eh! What are you saying? Shay you're supposed to be washing your car?" And my dad runs off.
I finally finished my speech successfully without a single mistake. I walked back to my line and I heard snickering and giggles. I looked at Kemi and said "Thanks a lot"."You're welcome". He replied, looking proud of himself. I was a bit worried for Kemi though. I hoped he wouldn't get in trouble with the Senior prefect. I saw her watch Kemi from afar.
At home:
I walked into the house and found my mum and Aunty Enita arguing. I was getting tired of this. I greeted them both.
"Mummy migwor ma, Aunty Enita migwir ma". They didn't answer me. I sighed and walked up to my room.
I changed out of my school uniform, ate lunch and went to play with Enohor in hers since I didn't have any homework today.
I walked into her room after knocking and saw her playing with her barbie dolls. She tied one to her back and pretended to be making food for the other. She looked so adorable while pretending to be a mum.
"Can I join you?". I asked.
"Ok, you're the Aunty. Jane is sick and you need to take her to the hospital, the hospital is your room by the way". She instructed, looking at her pretend jollof rice.
"Ok, who's Jane?" I asked.
"The barbie doll wearing the yellow dress with pink dots. Please be fast! I don't want another one of my babies to die". She said dramatically.
"Which other baby died?" I asked, rolling my eyes.
"Ada. She died for real, I tried using the microwave to fry bread but I put Ada inside it by accident and she melted." She said, still making her pretend jollof rice.
"OMG!! Enohor were you trying to kill us?! Why would you use a microwave without an adult's supervision". She looked at me like I was talking gibberish. I gave up and took Jane to the hospital.
Few minutes later, I heard clashing and
banging. I ran downstairs, instructing Enohor to remain in her room. I got to the living room and saw my mum holding a broken bottle, tears in her eyes and scars and blood stains on her body, blood dripping out of Aunty Enita's skin. My mouth was dangling wide open."It's not what it looks like, Sweetie". My mum said. "Stay out of this, she tried to kill me and might hurt you too. Get out of here!" She yelled.
"Come here my dear. I'm the victim here. See your mother's holding a broken bottle and I'm the one bleeding". Aunty Enita told me.
"BECAUSE YOU CAUGHT OPEN YOUR SKIN WITH A KNIFE!!" My mum yelled at her. I started crying not knowing who or what to believe.
I ran out of the room and into my parent's room. I grabbed a telephone, dialed my Dad's number and called him.
"Daddy. Mummy and Aunty Enita are fighting again. They're both bleeding and there's broken bottles everywhere. Please come quick". I said crying more and more. There was no time for a greeting.
I hope no one dies before daddy comes back. In the mean time, I'm going to lock myself in Enohor's room till Daddy arrives.
