"The end of one chapter marks the start of the other one. You can't keep re-reading old chapters, hoping the story will move ahead."

Perhaps the first lie you come across is the one when your parents and teachers say when talking about 10th Standard, "Do your best in 10th Standard, get into the science stream and it's going to be a breeze."

Heck no.

But well, me being me, I believed my lovely teachers and parents and the day after the exams ended I was the happiest person, and perhaps the most relaxed person on the planet. That is until, my mother greeted me with a cup of tea and a question that had haunted me since the first day of Vocational Guidance in ninth standard, "What do you want to do?"

I must admit that my mind was not in its right place, since the past month had passed in the stress of the exam so I rather dumbly answered, "Drink that tea."

This sounded like petulance to my mother, who glared at me and slammed the tea on the dining table. I chanced a look at the clock, it was 10 AM.

'Well that explains it,' I thought, hitting my forehead with my palm. She is angry because I got up late.

I sipped the hot tea, inhaling the fragrance of ginger.

"You know I am asking about what you're going to do with your life, don't you?" My mother prompted after I made no move to answer her previous question.

I grimaced. It was not the first time I was asked the question, but the fact that my answer had never been honest is something that made me grimace.

'It's now or never,' I thought, taking a deep breath and wobbling the cup in my hand in the process, hot tea spilling on my lap.

"Freak!" I exclaimed as the spots where the tea had touched my skin burned.

"Oh my God! You're so careless, Myra!" My mother screeched, "Go change those pajamas before they get stained."

Really, mom? I am getting burnt here but all you care about is tea stains?

Of course, I didn't dare say that to her face, but instead, I ended up running to the bathroom to change.

"Might as well have a bath," I grumbled to myself.

I stepped out of the bathroom wearing my Slytherin t-shirt and track pants, even though I possessed no intention of working out. Pulling out my cell phone, I planned to binge-watch YouTube, indeed you need to plan important things of your life. I turned on the fan at high speed. My grandmother and mother, the smart housewives of the world had a rule of not having air conditioning on during the day time, their explanation was saving electricity, but I knew that the underlying cause was to make sure we were not being lethargic and sleeping all day long. Considering me, sleeping all day long is definitely a possibility.

As soon as I had started to watch Superwoman's videos, I received a text from Jyoti, informing me that I was going to go with her and a group of friends to the movie. She did not bother asking me whether I wanted to go or not, or whether my parents would permit me to go out or not. While, there might be troubles with my mood to go or not to go, Jyoti was aware that my parents would hardly say no to me.

Often, I had heard my classmates be jealous of me because my parents never said no to me. And it was funny because, I was not a spoiled brat and I had heard a fair share of 'no's. Once, I had enquired my mother about this and she had answered, "Contrary to the popular belief of you children, we don't hate you kids. We love you more than anything. We want you to be independent and make your own choices and yeah, we would love to give you reigns of your kingdom, but you'd have to prove that you are capable of handling yourself."
