You couldn't believe it, it worked, it really worked! You didn't really believe the radio would reach the Safe Haven, but it did. Hearing Newt's voice made you feel whole, like the world was finally on your side. The moment his smooth beautiful accent filled your ears all you wanted to do was jump in his arms and kiss him. You wanted Newt, and it never occurred to you how much until right now.
"Newt?"
"Brenda just went to go get Jorge, he'll be here soon." Newt assured and you nodded, even though they couldn't see you.
"Newt," you said, pausing for a second. "I love you." You told him and waited for his response.
"(Y/n), I want to say this to you in person." Newt told you and you knew he was right, that it would only feel right if you were both face to face, but you wanted to hear him say it so badly. "I can't believe your alive." The boy said and you laughed.
"I'll be honest, so was I." You told him and you heard a familiar voice speak up from behind.
"How is this possible? That building completely caved in on itself." You knew the voice belonged to Thomas, and you felt the huge weight, which you didn't know you had, lift off your shoulders.
"It didn't, at least, not immediately. There was a platform stuck in another building that I landed on. I jumped to safety and that's when the entire building crumbled." You informed.
"Man shuck face, always gotta get yourself almost killed every time we leave you on your own." You knew that had to be Minho, who else would call you shuck face?
"You know, with that being the attitude I'll be coming back to, I might just stay here." You joked but you looked over to see Gage shake his head. He wanted to leave and you were planning to do so right when you had the chance. You listened carefully as Jorge explained to you how to start the berg. Gage had been helpful, or at least tried to, but that was all you needed from him. The boy seemed to tire easily so eventually you just instructed him to just sit down and wait.
You had also informed the group on how you had acquired the radios. They weren't surprised that you went on a mission like that without backup.
"Alright hermana, listen, there is a lever now with a blinking red light. Do you see it?" Jorge asked and there was a silence that stretched out longer than it should have.
"Yeah." You finally said. "I see it, do I pull it?"
"Yes, that should start the engines so there will be a loud clanging sound. Don't be alarmed." Jorge told you.
"Got it. I'm flipping it now." You said and then gently let the lever switch and then the berg started rumbling. It shook the whole ship but then settled.
You looked over to Gage and the two of you smiled to one another. Then, Gage ran up and threw himself in your arms and wrapped you in an inescapable hug. You laughed with joy as the lights and screens all turned on. You let go of the radio and pressed the button.
"We got it." You said calmly and you heard all the people in the back jumping with joy. Soon, you'll be with them.
"Okay hermana, once you get in the air, you can turn on the auto pilot. I'll give the coordinates and the ship will do the rest."
"Okay, prefect." You said and then listened as Jorge gave you the last of the instructions. Eventually, after some pressing of buttons and a flip of a few switches, the berg rumbled and you felt it lift off the ground.
Immediately, you ran over and sat in front of the wheel. You weren't able to put auto pilot on yet so you were in charge of driving until you could. At this point, it wasn't hard, kinda like driving a car except much different. Luckily you had Jorge to help you.
"Alright hermana, now you have to-"BANG!
Before you could hear the rest of what the man was saying, the whole berg shook. It was different, harsher then the engines would have been. You looked over to Gage as he gripped the armrest of his chair tightly.
"What was that?" He asked but you shook your head.
"I have no idea." You said honestly.
"(Y/n)?" You heard Newt say over the radio. "What the bloody hell was that?"
"I don't know, why do people keep asking?!" You said in frustration even though it wasn't Newt's fault. "Sorry, just frustrated. Something hit us from behind."
"You sure it wasn't the engines hermana? After the episode in the Last City that berg took a beating."
"I'm positive." You said as the berg began flying over the ocean. Then, another big bang sent the berg shaking once more. You jerked forward from the force but Gage was so latched onto his seat that nothing could break his stance.
"Damn it!" You shouted as you sat up again and held your forehead as pain radiated through it.
"There is a button, it will bring up the rear cameras. It should be the red one next to the right hand corner of the screen." Jorge instructed and you found it quickly.
"Found it." You told them and then pressed the button. The screen beside it illuminated and you could see everything behind the ship. That's when you saw it.
"Holy shuck!" You screamed as you took the wheel and turned it to the side so quickly that it was basically sideways in the air. You could hear bullets fly and the thing behind you follow.
"(Y/n), what's happening over there?" Someone asked over the radio but you didn't know who it was over Gage's terrified screams.
"It's WICKED, damn it! They sent a berg after us!" You told them as you looked at the screen again and watched as the berg behind you readied for another shot. "How do I use the guns on these things?!" You shouted.
"You can't, they got fried in the city rescuing you and Thomas!" Jorge responded.
You worried for a second that they knew about the Safe Haven and that you put everyone at risk, but there was no way. If they knew about the Safe Haven then they wouldn't bother with you. If you could get them out of the sky then you would be able to escape them and get to the Safe Haven without any trouble. But you had to act now.
"How badly did you piss them off?!" Someone, obviously Minho, asked.
"Enough for them to send a berg after me!" You shouted back to them and then you glanced down. Your eye caught a glimpse of one of the guns you had gotten when you were at the WICKED base. You then looked back at the screen.
You had to act now.
"Gage," you said, getting up and grabbing the gun. "Take the wheel."
"What?!" Gage said but he got up quickly and did as he was told.
"(Y/n)!" You heard someone shout through the radio. "You did not just ask a five year old to take the wheel!"
You walked out of the cockpit and into the main quarters of the berg. You stepped over the blood stains and went over to the button that lowered the ramp. Without a second thought, you pressed it and the berg rumbled as the ramp lowered.
"(Y/n)! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!" You heard little Gage scream at you but you ignored him as you looked out at the lowering ramp. You could see the berg right behind.
"What the bloody hell is going on?" That was obviously Newt.
"She's being an idiot!" Gage responded but that probably wasn't the best thing to tell him. But the kid wasn't wrong, this wasn't very smart. But then again, where has being smart ever gotten you?
The ramp was completely lowered and you tried to keep your balance, but the chances of that happening were slim. You watched as the guns of the berg trailing your ship loaded up and got them ready to fire. You had an idea, and at this point you didn't even question how stupid or dangerous it was. This was how your plans always went.
You loaded your gun and pointed it at theirs, waiting for the berg to be ready to shoot. If you shot in the right spot in their guns, you could take down their entire ship. You just had to have good aim and luck.
You brought the gun up and put your finger over the trigger. They waited and you were beginning to get impatient.
"Come on already, SHOOT IT!" You screamed at the top of your lungs as if they could hear you.
Obviously, something provoked them because they readied their guns completely and were about to shoot. Gage continued to remind you that you were stupid and to come back to the cockpit, but the plan was already in motion.
Right as the berg was about to fire at you, you pulled the trigger. The bullet flied and the kickback sent your hand backwards and a ringing in your ears.
At first, nothing happened, the berg continued flying and you thought that it didn't work. That was, until, the berg's right wing, the one you shot, burst into flames. The whole side of the ship exploded and the force sent you flying against the wall. Your back hit hard and you cried out in pain. You slid to the floor, your cheeks touching the cold metal, sending a shiver down your spine. You pushed yourself up and sat your back against the wall.
The heat coming from the other berg as it crashed into the ocean brought you back. It brought you back to the Last City, to the crumbling building. It was like you weren't physically there, but mentally, you were falling into the dark smoky abyss. It brought back the feeling of being totally and utterly alone. It brought back the feeling you felt when you thought you were going to die. But what was that feeling? To think of it, you never really explored what that feeling truly was.
Was it fear or bravery?
Strength or weakness?
Was it giving up or giving in?
At that moment, all you wanted to do was rest your eyes and leave the world behind.
