[THIS STORY IS BEST READ ON DARK MODE FOR A BETTER EXPERIENCE C:]

TW: If you have bad arachnophobia or get triggered by any kind of disgusting imagery, please either don't read this or be cautious while you do. It's not very bad in my opinion; but I'm not good at judging my writing at all, so I'm putting this warning here just to be safe.
For this chapter, it's okay just to skip the italics, but I'm not sure what the next chapters will bring, so just a friendly warning since I don't want to traumatise anyone ^^. This story's about nightmares after all ~ ⚠

The concept and structure of this book is a little strange but I had the idea of a story-mode game kinda experience and thought it'd be interesting, [EDIT: then got told that it was actually already a thing and that they were call cyoas lmhoo] so I'll try my best :D
Sorry if it gets strange in any way though; I'm a bit all over the place myself to begin with — TwT

Also this is an introduction, so there'll be no decision to make for this chapter. The options and the paths will officially start from chapter two! :D

Anywho, thanks for reading and hope you enjoy!

Feel free to listen to the soundtrack above while you read to increase the spookiness too (It's just what I was listening to as I proofread this LMHO) ~ Though complete silence may be the most suitable ~ ;D

~~~~~~~
You were floating.
Floating above some strange, fluffy clouds that drifted gently beneath you. Your surroundings were a deep, dark blue void of nothingness, like the depths of the sea. Bubbles swayed around you, and a crow flew overhead. Your hearing seemed dulled, almost like your ears were clogged, and the only sound you could really hear was that of your own slow heartbeat. It was as though you were underwater...Yet still so high that you could see space and the stars above you. Was this what the edge of the atmosphere looked like?
Wait, what, that doesn't make any sen—
A sudden, piercing scream rings out around you — repeated echoes and echoes of continuous, high-pitched screaming — deafening you to the point where you almost felt as though your head was being split open. You clutch your dirtied, soot-grey cloak tighter around you as the endless, suffocating darkness shifted from hazy greys, to blues, to purples, and finally a deep blood red --
A sudden cloud of mist engulfs you...and smoke clogs your lungs, but you are unable to cough — You feel as though your throat is being tightened by an unknown force —
And then comes a hand. A huge, clawed hand, covered with blisters and blood, comes closer...closer...There are countless insects crawling over its thin skin...You could almost see the whites of bone — a huge tarantula suddenly protrudes out of  one huge blister — popping it open and spilling puss all over the fingers — one hairy leg after the other — Its many eyes were naught; showing empty sockets of nothingness...blood oozing out from every socket, a sticky leg moves stiffly forward once more—
The hand is inches away from your face, and you let out a strangled scream, your throat clogging with water and you gasped in desperation for oxygen as the hand finally makes a lunge for your face — Its boney fingers clasp your neck tightly, squeezing it free of blood...You choke — A screech sounds once more — the spider hisses and snaps its pincers before finally darting straight at your face —
BZZZT.
You let out a terrible shriek of pain, spluttering and gasping for air.
A dream...? But it felt so real...
A sudden breeze rushes past you, and you realise that you're outside — but the floor feels strangely soft and comfortable, and you could hear the soft gushing of water somewhere nearby. You slowly open your eyes, almost half expecting the hand to come zooming towards you —
...Thankfully, you were just being paranoid. Instead, you were met with a somewhat peaceful but gloomy building towering before you. You were lying on what felt like sand, and as you heaved yourself into a sitting position, you finally realised you were sat on sand, and that this was a beach of some sort. The building wasn't far ahead, made up of what seemed to be a cluster of metal pipes piled over and over each other, with hundreds of metal slates of different shapes and sizes carelessly shoved in between, creating some kind of rickety, rectangular structure.
It takes you a few seconds to regain your composure, though you definitely weren't looking forward to moving on. You look towards the right, only now noticing that there seems to be what looks like a broken television sat on the sand, just short of the shore.
Why on earth would there be an old television on a beach in the middle of nowhere...?
A sudden thump! startles you, and you immediately scramble to take cover behind the old mechanism, instinctively fearful of what was coming for you. Was it some sort of monster or an evil spirit or a zombie — or — or —
There was silence for a moment, until you hear a friendly voice whisper through the silence followed by the small pit-pat of two sets of feet.
"Hey!" The hushed voice called out.
You peek gingerly over the top of the boxed metal, a little scared the voices would be deceiving you and turning out to be —
...It seemed that you were overthinking too much...
You were met by two small figures. They were only small children like you; one was a boy wearing a paper bag over his head, holding the hand of a girl who looked as though she'd just crawled out of an underground prison cell.
"Hey!" The boy called out again, his hushed voice as friendly as a whisper could possibly sound.
You were still a little cautious, but after a few moments eventually gave in and decided that they seemed safe, so you walked out from behind the box.
The girl just stared expressionlessly at you as you approached, and you couldn't read the boy's expression of course, but he did seem much more approachable and had a cozy, amiable vibe about him.
He told you that he was Mono, and that the quiet girl was named Six. You, of course, told him your name too.
The presence of others like you definitely made you feel reassured, as you slipped your hand into Six's completing a chain of three. Mono lead the way, pulling the two of you along, as you ventured into the abandoned building...
You'd hardly made it four steps in when you came face to face with the blinding light of another television, except this one was on and looked newer than everything around it...
Six and you immediately turn away from the light, but Mono seemed as though he wanted to resist it. He held his head low...trudging slowly closer and closer to the TV...before finally slapping both his small hands onto it. You cover your ears as the unbearable sound of loud static filled the room, as Mono pushed...and pushed...and pushed...
And then, all was quiet
