Chapter 9

Evelyn's POV

"This is not what I had in mind when you decided that we're going to the park....." I say looking at Emma clinging to Lucas's leg.

"Me neither."

"Can we play hide and seek?!" "Don't you think you should be going back to your mom?" "My mom will be on her phone for hoooooooouuuuuuurrrrrrrrrssss. So I can play with you longer!" Lucas groans and gives me a look that says 'Please help me get this kid off me'. I snicker at his face which causes him to send me a playful glare. I'm still thinking about how we even got into this situation. I recall what happened a few minutes ago.

Flashback

Lucas and I are walking towards the park. "Can we get ice cream first? The weather feels nice and warm." He nods and we make our way to an ice cream shop. Well it's more like him walking and me following him like a lost puppy. We reach an ice cream shop called 'Barney's Ice Cream'. We enter and see only a few people. A woman, who seems to be in her early 20s, on the phone with a little girl, most probably her daughter, sitting next to her, a man, that looks to be in his 80s, reading a newspaper and a couple who are talking with smiles on their face.

Suddenly, they all stop what they're doing and look at us. They stand up and bow at us, we'll more like bow at Lucas. We go to the counter to see a man, who looks to be in his 40s, smiling at us brightly. He bows at Lucas and says, "Good morning Alpha! What a surprise to see you here. To what do I owe the pleasure of seeing you and this beautiful lady here?" His words cause my face to heat up and I hide behind Lucas. I'm not usually a shy person. I know how to stand up for myself. But when it comes to compliments and meeting new people, I'm an absolute mess.

My actions causes Lucas to chuckle and say, "We're just here for ice cream Barney. I would like to have the strawberry ice cream please. What about you, little one?" "Can I have the mint chocolate ice cream please?" Barney smiles and nods. "Large, medium or small?" Lucas looks at me and I say, "Medium for me." "Me too." Barney nods and takes out 2 medium cups. He grabs 2 scooper and scoops out the strawberry and mint chocolate ice cream and places them in the cups. He takes out 2 little spoons and places them in the cup.

He gives us our cups and we thank him. "Where do you wanna sit?" I think for a few seconds and answer, "I guess the corner booth." He nods and we sit in a corner booth. "Do you wanna play 20 questions? I wanna learn more about you." I nod and ask him to go first.

"What's your favorite color?"

I chuckle and answer, "Brown. What about you?"

"Green."

I raise my eyebrow at him and he gives me an innocent look.

"What's your favorite food?"

He thinks for a second and answers, "Lasagna. You?"

"Same. It's so good." Just thinking about it makes my mouth water which makes him nod.

"What do you do for fun?"

"I'd say read books. They really give you a lot of knowledge. You?"

He pauses and answers, "I don't really have time to do anything. I'm busy taking care of the pack that I don't get time to myself. But ever since you came I have been taking a lot of breaks." I chuckle and say, "Now we can't have the Alpha avoid his work, can we?"

He smiles sheepishly. "What do-" "Excuse me." We both turn towards the small voice and see a little girl. I realize it's the little girl who was sitting with her mother. "Yes?" "Can you both please come to my height you're soooo tall." I look at the girl in shock and smile. I look and Lucas and he nods. We crouch down to her height and Lucas asks, "Is there a problem?" The little girl nods with an adorable pout on her lips. "What's the problem?" "I'm reallyyyyy bored. Can you play with me?"

I look at her with a straight face and then look at Lucas. His face has no emotion but then I see hesitance. "Sure." I look at him in surprise. I expected him to say no because by the looks of it he's not that close with kids. "Can you tell us your name? And is your mother okay with it?" "My name is Emma. And yes my mom is okay with it." She points at her mother who smiles and waves at us. We wave back and Lucas asks, "What do you wanna do?" "Can we go to the park?" "Okay but first let me ask your mother for her number just in case."

I walk over to the woman who was doing something on her phone. "Ma'am?" The woman jumps in surprise and looks at me with wide eyes. "I'm so sorry for scaring you, but I wanted to ask for your number as we're taking your daughter to the park." She nods and takes out a pen. "I don't have a paper...." "That's okay. You can just write it on my arm." I give her my arm and she writes down her number.

We leave the ice cream shop and walk towards the park. The taste of mint chocolate is so yummy. I don't know why people insult and hate it so much. (Me who has tasted mint chocolate once and didn't like it: 😶) We finish our ice cream and reach the park. "What do you wanna play?" "Can we play tag?" I look at Lucas and he nods.

10 minutes later

"Can we........ take a little..........break....?" I ask, completely out of breath. Lucas and Emma look at each other and nod. The second they nod, I fall to the ground, out of breath. Don't get me wrong. I love having a chance to increase my pace. But running for 10 minutes? And that too with a werewolf and a hybrid? No thank you. And the fact they don't even look tired. They look like the 10 minutes run was the simplest thing they've ever done in their lives. Lucky supernaturals.

I feel a hand caress my head and look up to see Lucas looking at me in worry. "Let's head back? You need to rest." I nod and he helps me stand up. He keeps his hand around me and calls Emma. "Yes?" "I think it's time we go back." "Nooo! I don't wanna go back." "Emma, Evelyn is tired. She needs to rest." Emma shakes her head and latches on to Lucas's leg. I stare at her with shock and say, "Emma please let go. We have to go home." "No! I wanna play with you!"

Flashback over

I try thinking on how do I get Emma off Lucas's leg. "Psst." I look towards the source of the sound and see Lucas trying to discreetly get closer to me. I motion to ask what's he doing. He points at my arm and I look at it. Then I remember that Emma's mother gave her number. I look at my arm and see the number. Thank God it didn't fade or erase. I take out my phone and type in the number.

After a few rings, I hear a woman's voice in the call. I recognize her voice as the woman in the ice cream shop. I explain the entire situation and she says that she'll be there in a few minutes. After a few minutes, I see the woman running towards us. She stands in front of us and bows. "I'm so sorry Alpha and ma'am. I didn't mean to cause any problems." I grab her by her shoulders and say, "It's okay. It was no problem." She looks at me with shock and nods.

She somehow got Emma off of Lucas's leg and once again apologizes. I stare at her for a few seconds and say, "Let's meet up sometimes. What's your name?" The woman looks at me in surprise and says, "Heather and sure." We wave at each other and walk away. "What was that about?" I look at Lucas looking at me while raising one of his eyebrows. "What?" "Why did you suddenly wanna be friends with her?"

I shrug and answer, "I don't know. I just felt like I wanted to be friends with her." He nods and we walk towards the house. I feel something touching my hand and see that Lucas's finger touches mine. "Sorry." He looks away in embarrassment and I see a bit of pink on his cheeks. This causes me to smile and grab his hand. He looks at me in shock as I intertwine my hand with his.

"I thought the guy was supposed to be the romantic one." I chuckle and say, "Not really. A girl can be a romantic too." I wink at him which causes him to chuckle and squeeze my hand. We walk in a comfortable silence back home.
