Manhattan, New York
(The Next Day)"I met this guy on the train yesterday." I told my co-worker/best friend Lexi on our lunch break.
We've been cool ever since I started working at this company 4 years ago. She was the only one I felt like I could relate to and we both would talk shit about this place and our bosses so it made us even closer.
"Ooo girl!!! What's his name?" She asked excitedly.
"His name is Victor." I smiled to myself as I remembered our interaction last night on the train.
"Oh girl he must be on your mind heavy if he got you smiling like that." She squealed.
"I won't say that.." I rolled my eyes playfully.
"But he was kinda cute. He kept asking me questions about my drawings and seemed really interested too. He complimented them and told me I should make it a full time thing. I've been thinking about what he said since last night and I think I might go for it. Plus I hate this place anyways." I sighed as I looked over at my boss walking over to our table.
"Mecca, when you come back from break I want you to organize my paperwork from last Friday in a binder I left on your desk. I need that for my meeting tomorrow." She demanded before walking away abruptly.
"Damn why she talking to you like you her peasant or something?" Lexi said with a stank look on her face.
"I don't know but I'm getting sick of picking up her fucking slack." I rolled my eyes as I began to pick at my salad.
"Girl forget her. Maybe Victor was brought to you as a reality check. Just to let you know you deserve better you know. I think you should go for it as well." Lexi explained.
"I think I will. It's better than being here for the rest of my life anyway." I sighed as I started to eat my food again.
(Hours Later)
I had just gotten off work and was on my way down the subway station when I suddenly bumped into someone falling. I groaned in pain as I looked up to see Victor standing over me.
"Shit, I'm so sorry." He said kneeling down to help me up.
"It's alright. I need to stop rushing home everyday." I laughed.
"I don't blame you. I be rushing home too." He laughed as he looked me in the eyes.
We stared at each other for a moment before he broke the silence speaking again.
"Um Mecca right?" He questioned.
"Yes. And you're Victor." I laughed.
"Right. Ha, I'm sorry I just wanted to make sure I got your name right." He chuckled.
"I understand. You just got off of work?" I asked.
"Yeah. I work at the Museum of Modern Arts in Manhattan." He said.
"Oh really? No wonder you were so interested in my drawings." I mentioned making him smile.
"Yeah. Your drawing style is unique. I've never seen it before. It's really nice." He explained.
"Gosh you just love making me blush." I smiled rolling my eyes.
"I mean you're beautiful. Who wouldn't want to?" He added making me look over in shook.
"Well thank you. You don't look to bad yourself." I smiled.
"Shit I know." He smirked playfully making me roll my eyes real hard.
"Nah I'm just playing, but you are beautiful." He assured.
"Thank you." I smiled.
That's when we both looked over at the train pulling into the station.
"Damn the train is early." He said before looking back over at me.
"You coming or what?" He asked.
"Yeah. How else am I getting home?" I said playfully.
"Shit idk you just standing there." He laughed making me give him this stank look.
"Fix your face and let's go." He shook his head walking toward the train as I followed behind him.
"Who does he think he is? Acting like he my nigga or something." I asked myself.
Once we were on the train, we both sat next to each other and began to ask each other questions about ourselves.
Victor told me that he graduated from high school 3 years ago and was trying to save up money to go to school for Business. He always wanted to open up his own business and be self employed. It annoyed him that he had to work for someone other than himself.
I told him about me majoring in Art before dropping out due to high tuition cost. I was given an opportunity by my father to work for this "Great" law firm in Manhattan his friend owned and I'd get paid a lot of money so I'll be able to eventually get back the money I owed from student loans.
After awhile I completely threw away my dream of becoming an artist and settled for my good paying job at the firm.
That's when the train stopped at my stop making me remember I was heading.
"It's was nice getting to know you. I really hope you open up that business eventually. Have a goodnight." I said as I started to get off the train until Victor stopped like before.
"Hey wait!" He said gently grabbing my hand sending shivers throughout my body.
"I was just wondering if you wanted to go out to eat next time you're free so we could talk some more? Maybe a nice restaurant in Manhattan?" He asked.
"Yeah I'd like that." I smiled.
"Okay..uh here's my number." He said as he began to pat his pockets looking for his phone.
He found it in his back pocket and started searching through it until he finally found his number in his contacts, giving me his phone to take his number down. I took my phone out and put his number under "Subway Boy" and showed it to him.
"Oh you think you funny huh?" He chuckled.
"Oh I know I'm funny." I laughed before handing his phone back finally getting off the train.
