kurai loves his garden dearly,
maybe even more than his son ; and will kill a person if they even / touch / his roses

he's very fond of his son
and boasts about ryuzaki often. ryuzaki might feel like kurai doesn't even remember his name, but truthfully, the man is just traumatised.

he's lost more than his wife.
kurai actually had a son before ryuzaki, but his son was murdered by an enemy of the japanese mafia. it's why kurai won't get close to ryuzaki ; he's afraid he'll lose the only son he has left.

he's not keen on ryuzaki being gay,
as he wants grandchildren some day ; of his own blood. eager for that day, he will attempt to destroy any gay relationships his son might be involved in.
