James Potter's heart had only ever belonged to one girl - Lily Evans. From the moment he saw her on the Hogwarts Express, he knew in his mind that he was going to marry her. Now, nearly six years later, James has been unsuccessful in getting Lily to not hate him, much less go on a date with him. He can't be that much of an arrogant toe-rag, right? As his sixth and penultimate year at Hogwarts comes to an end, James has begun to accept that he's not meant to be James Potter-Evans. So no, James didn't have very high hopes for that summer - he would most likely spend every day moping around in his bedroom now that his best mate, Sirius, had moved out of the Potter house and into his own flat.
Betty Blake could be categorized by two things - the fact that she was a Muggle and the fact that she was a romantic. Her life was spent romanticizing every moment and waiting for the day that she would be swept off her feet. But at 17, she's yet to have a boyfriend. Her idea of love comes from every book she's ever read and the little moments she's seen in passing. So no, Betty didn't have very high hopes for that summer - her father had decided that his new job was more important than the house they had lived in all their life, and the job she had gotten scheduled her almost every day. How was she supposed to find the time for a summer romance if her summer job was taking over her life?
The day that James Potter walked into a coffee shop, the last thing he expected was to meet a girl dead set on getting him and Lily together. And the last thing Betty expected, who saw playing matchmaker as the best way to make her summer interesting, was to find herself falling under James Potter's charm.
