In this universe, there is such a thing as soulmates, but not for everyone. If a person has been given a soulmate, they will have their mate's name and birthdate written behind their ear. This is their perfect match. Once a soulmate is found and a bond fully-formed, that bond is unbreakable. The intimate touch of any other becomes skin-crawlingly revolting. Any forced touching on a bonded mate is a serious offense.

Within each soulmate pair, there is one dominant and one submissive partner. The dominant will have their mate's name, along with their birthdate, written behind their left ear. The submissive will have it behind their right. Given the intimate nature of these relationships, many privileges are allowed for bonded mates. It is not uncommon for a submissive to suddenly require the care of their dominant, and as such can request their mate's presence at any time.

Some people do not have assigned soulmates, but are still designated as dominant or submissive with a small circle behind the corresponding ear. These people experience the same urges and needs as dominants and submissives in soulmate pairs. As a result, many choose to pair together in monogamous relationships. These relationships are considered just as serious as soulmate relationships, but are not as unwaveringly permanent.

Some people have no soulmate or designation at all. They may adopt a dominant or submissive designation if they wish, and change their mind as they see fit. They do not experience the same needs and urges as designated dominants and submissives. Those without a marking can form monogamous pairs just like any other, but don't feel such a strong need to do so.
