Thyroid gland, located in below your Adam's apple creates hormones & controls how your body uses energy & your body's sensitivity to other hormones. It's part of the endocrine system, that includes all the glands in your body that regulate essential functions.

Thyroid releases thyroid hormones that control metabolism. Thyroid controls your metabolism, the process that your body uses to transform food to energy your body uses to function, through T4 & T3, to keep many of your body's systems working correctly.

Thyroid is considered as not a regenerative organ, so damage of the gland may be difficult to regenerate. Despite its importance, normal life is possible without it, if you take regular treatment to prevent hypothyroidism, taking thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

When there is excess production of thyroid hormone, it's called hyperthyroidism & less production is hypothyroidism. Both conditions are serious & need to be taken care of. Though thyroid disorders are common, thyroidectomy is preferred rarely. Severe & prolonged hypothyroidism & hyperthyroidism can cause loss of hair. According to a projection from various studies on thyroid disease, it has been estimated that about 42 million people in India suffer from thyroid diseases.

Early warning signs of thyroid problems are gastrointestinal problems, mood changes, weight changes, skin problems, sensitivity to temperature changes, vision changes (more with hyperthyroidism), hair thinning or hair loss, memory problems, rapid heartbeat, anxiety etc.

Lack of thyroid hormones can affect your life expectancy, including heart disease & obesity. The most severe consequence of not having thyroid hormones in your body is myxedema coma or death. Weight loss, fatigue, trouble sleeping, tremors and sweating.

Most important clinical parameters measuring the thyroid functions are TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone, T3 & T4 (different thyroid hormones), TSI (thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin) Antithyroid antibody test (antibodies marker), FT3, FT4, Anti Tg (Antithyroglobulin antibody) & Anti TPO (Anti-thyroid peroxidase).

Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, whole grains & antioxidant-rich foods can improve overall health & benefit the thyroid gland. Yoga postures like Sarvangasana, Halasana, Kapalbhati, Ujjayi Pranayama are good for Thyroid.
