She is unique among Greek moon goddesses, since she is the only one portrayed as the moon incarnate by early classical poets.

SELENE was the Titan goddess of the moon. She was depicted as a beautiful young woman riding sidesaddle on a horse or driving a chariot drawn by a pair of winged steeds
across the night sky.
Her lunar sphere or crescent was either a crown set upon her head or the fold of a raised, shining cloak. She was sometimes said to drive a team of oxen and her lunar crescent was likened to a pair of bull's horns.
Aeschylus calls her the eye of night.

Her brother Helios was the Greek sun god, and her sister Eos was the goddess of the dawn. Selene was also worshiped as Phoebe, the Huntress. Like many Greek goddesses, she had a number of different aspects. Selene is believed to be an earlier moon goddess than Artemis, who in some ways replaced her. Among the Romans, Selene was known as Luna.
A number of other goddesses were also associated with the moon, however, only Selene was represented by the old Greek poets represented as the moon incarnate. Other Greek moon goddesses included Hekate, Artemis, Nyx , Chang'e

During the night, Selene would drive her chariot with the moon across the sky. As the night was ending and the day was beginning, Eos would make her appearance in the sky as the goddess of the dawn
Selene was worshipped in Greek mythology because of her ability to pull the moon across the sky with her chariot to provide a bright light in the otherwise dark sky. Selene was considered the all-seeing eye of the night because the moon would always be visible in the night sky, and no one could run from it.

Another power that Selene possessed was the ability to allow mortals to dream while they slept. She would often visit mortals in their sleep and give them an answer to a question they may have been asking
Selene represents constant change.
As the moon would go through different phases each month, Selene personified life’s constant changes.

Selene has the power to give sleep and to light the night. She has control over time, and like the moon itself, she is ever-changing. It's interesting then, that one of the most enduring parts of Selene's myth has to do with keeping her beloved Endymion in an unchanged state for eternity

Selene falls in love with the mortal shepherd Endymion and unites with him, bearing him fifty daughters.
The story goes that she visits him every night—the moon coming down from the sky—and she loves him so much she can't bear the thought of his death. She casts a spell putting him into a deep sleep forever so she may see him, unchanging, for all eternity
Selene was enamored with Endymion and asked Zeus (God) if he would grant Endymion with eternal youthfulness.

Zeus would grant her wish by putting Endymion in an eternal sleep in a cave on Mount Latmus where Selene would visit him each night.
