Legolas had just returned from the quest of the ring when he decided to ask his father, to ask me, about his mother:
"Father?" I heard him call. I turned, "Yes, my son?" He seemed quite hesitant with what what he was going to say. "Speak," I said.
He lifted his head. "Father," he finally started, "you do know how I always wanted to know mother's story, am I right?" At this, I lifted an eyebrow. So he has finally gathered courage to bring that topic once more, hm? "And?" I asked.
"I wanted to know if you could..." his voice trailed off. After a moment of silence, he cleared his throat and continued, "maybe you could tell me her story?" He was answered by silence. I decided to make him quite uneasy, I never have have teasing times with him anymore.
Deciding that the silence was enough, I smiled at him (shocking him), and stood up. I headed to my desk and picked a book up. I returned to Legolas and handed to him the book, "This, Legolas," I sat down again, "is a book by your mother." he stared at it in amazement. "Mother made this?" he asked. I chuckled, "Yes, my son. This book holds the story of your mother's life. She wanted to make it for you." he smiled widely.
"My son, there were times I sat on my throne with someone else. There were times I shared my chambers with someone else. There were times when I was not the only one to carry you. There were times, there were times that I was nice, contented, and, in love. Hm, don't listen to me. Ah! How about we read now?" At this, his face brightened, "Yes! Let us read it together, father!" he sat beside me on my bed and opened the book."
I was glad he asked for the story, she would have been happy. I sighed silently, I still remember the days when she was pregnant, she was always so busy writing in that book. And when she was finished, we sat side by side, day by day, reading it. It was one of the best times with her. I... miss her. My son was the only one to prevent me from fading when she died.
Now I must enjoy my time with Legolas while I can. I must mend the gap that has formed between us. For Vanlanthiriel.
