chapter seven // the move

" and I needed money,
but I'm too shy too ask her."

" Honestly, Peeta," I laugh. " I can manage them."

Peeta laughs, too, carrying my bags. Willow clasps my hand.

" Daddy's stronger, mommy," Willow giggles.

Peeta transports both bags into one hand and ruffles Willow's hair. " Don't say that to mommy's face. We don't know what might happen."

I laugh slightly.

Peeta throws his key back to me. I catch it with one hand. We near his large home and I gasp. Peeta laughs.

I unlock the door, and Peeta rushes inside, dropping my bags. He sighs in relief. I step inside, letting go of Willow's hand.

Willow gasps. " Wow. It's like a fairy castle!"

" For my very own princess," Peeta says.

I smile at the two of them. Hopefully Peeta and I can become friends, like we were meant to in the beginning, and he can be a good father to our child.

It's weird seeing her with Peeta. It's always just been the two of us - or the two of us and Gale. But if anyone knows the importance of having a father figure, it's me.

" How about we grab some dinner first and then I'll show you guys your rooms?" Peeta asks.

" Yeah, do you want to order in?" I say.

" Um," Peeta says, looking ashamed. " I'm a bit short on cash-"

" I'll cover it." I reply.

" Katniss, I can't let you do that."

" It's the least I can do, Peeta!" I laugh. " And anyway, I want too." And it's true. I do want too.

Peeta smiles. " Well, okay."

While Willow has finished her fish and chips, Peeta and I are still munching on our chips and cheese.

Some cheesy programme is on the television, and it honestly must be the worst thing I've seen in my life.

All of a sudden, Peeta's hand finds mine. I flinch and look up at him. He removes it.

" I'm really sorry, Katniss."

" About what?" I ask, confused.

" About what happened five years ago," he says.

" Don't be sorry. Look what I got out of it." I smile distantly, looking at a playing Willow.

" But I'm sorry anyway, and if you could let me expl-"

" I don't want an explanation."

And we leave it at that.

After showing Willow to her new, huge bedroom, Peeta leads me down the hall. He points to a room in the corner.

" That's my room," he explains.

I nod to show my understanding.

" And this," he says, turning the door handle to another room, " is yours."

The room is smaller than Willow's, but rather more furnished. The walks are painting a pale lilac, and the carpet is an off-white colour. The bed in the middle is large, and is cover by a large sheet, decorated with lilacs. There is a dark oak wardrobe in the corner, and a matching dresser in the opposite corner. The window lets in just enough natural light.

" Oh, wow!" I grin. " It's beautiful!"

Peeta smiles slightly. " It's just the guest bedroom, so I'm afraid it's rather under furnished."

" No it's not!" I laugh, flopping down on the bed. I sit up. " Thank you so much, Peeta!"

" It's nothing, really, Katniss," he grins. " I'll leave you to get settled in, then?" He places my bags on the floor before leaving room.

I stand up and begin to unpack. Who knows how long we'll be staying here? I fill the wardrobe with clothes and the dresser with makeup. I change into a pair of comfortable shorts and a shirt, before braiding my hair tightly and climbing into bed.

I'm out before my head even hits the pillow.

I wake up to sunlight streaming through the window - my window. I sit up in bed and look around at my unfamiliar surroundings.

The first thing I do is pull on a hooded top. It's ten am, why hasn't Willow said anything yet? I start to panic and climb out of bed, rushing towards her room.

She's not there.

Oh, God. Where is she?

" Peeta!?" I shout, barrelling down the stairs.

" Yeah?" he shouts from the kitchen.

" Have you see-"

I walk in to see flour everywhere, a happy Peeta, and a giggling Willow. I sigh in relief when I see her and pull her into a hug.

" Oh my, God, I was so worried!" I say, letting her go.

" Well, I thought I'd let you get some extra sleep," he smiles. " We were going to make you breakfast but it isn't quite ready yet."

I run a hand through my hair. " Peeta. You didn't have to do that. I know she can be a handful."

Peeta shakes his head. " She's not a bother, honestly. And, anyway, I wanted too."

I smile and take a seat at the table.

About an hour later, Peeta places three plates of buns around the table and we all tuck in.

" Mmm, Peeta, these are amazing! What are they?" I moan, remembering his gift for baking and really appreciating it.

" Cheese buns," he says through a mouthful.

I smile. " They're so good."

" Oh! That reminds me!" he says, reaching into his pocket. " These," he dumps something metal into my hand, " are for you."

I look down at them, and, on closer inspection, they seem to be a set of keys.

" Peeta! No! This is your home!"

Peeta shakes his head and closes my fist around the keys. " It's your home, now, too."
