Present

Rowan rose slowly out of bed, his true mate, Aelin, asleep next to him. The sun had yet to rise so he knew it would be a while before she would wake.

Making the bed on his half, he pressed a kiss to Aelin's forehead and she offered a slight moan before settling once more. He had never seen her more peaceful than when she slept. Brushing her hair from her face he quietly left the bedside and made his way to their terrace.

Today.

Today would be hard. He kept track of the years.

Shifting into his hawk form, he sat on the railing. He wouldn't make it Doranelle and back in one day even if he used his wind, but he couldn't stand being around people today. Even being around Aelin would be difficult.

He took off towards the mountains. One of the few places he could escape people. Today he would spend alone. Aelin would understand.

So he flew until the sun rose and arched across the sky, and did not return until late into the night.
